The yen in both directions: three strategies, one EA, one risk setting — +140% in more than seven years of backtest at 1% risk per trade, with a 6.62% maximum drawdown.
Hanzo Yen Portfolio runs three independent, fully automated strategies on the two most liquid yen pairs, all on H1: a GBPJPY long strategy, a GBPJPY short strategy and a USDJPY long strategy. Each one trades with its own rules and its own magic number, and all three are controlled from one chart with one Money Management setting.
Most retail EAs only buy. This portfolio also has a dedicated short strategy, so it is not waiting on the sidelines every time the yen crosses turn down. All my EAs are listed in my MQL5 profile.
The rules are strict by design: no martingale, no grid, no averaging down. Every trade is protected by a real Stop Loss and Take Profit placed on the broker's server — never hidden — and each strategy holds at most one position, so there are never more than three positions open. Because the portfolio can be long and short on GBPJPY at the same time, it requires a Hedging account.
The three strategies
- Hanzo GBPJPY Long — GBP/JPY, H1, long only, with an automatic move to breakeven; positions closed on Friday evening
- Hanzo GBPJPY Short — GBP/JPY, H1, short only, with an automatic move to breakeven; positions closed on Friday evening
- Hanzo USDJPY Long — USD/JPY, H1, long only, with a trailing stop
Every strategy is fully isolated: its own symbol input, its own magic number and its own trade comment. Each one reads its indicators from its own market, whatever chart the EA is attached to, so every strategy behaves exactly like it does on its own chart and you can audit each one in your history.

Why long and short together
The long strategies profit when the yen weakens; the short strategy works the moves they sit out. Each strategy only trades when its own conditions are met, so while one waits another may be working. In the backtest, the drawdown of the whole portfolio (6.62%) was well below the sum of the three strategies' individual drawdowns (11.4%).
Keep in mind that the risk is set per strategy: at 1% per trade, up to three positions can be open at once, so up to 3% of the account can be at risk at the same time. Choose your risk per trade with that in mind.
Money Management (one setting for the three strategies)
- Risk mode per trade — percent of equity, so the risk follows the account as it grows or draws down, or a fixed amount of money per trade.
- % of equity per trade (Percent mode, rolling) — 1% by default, the configuration of the backtest.
- USD per trade (Fixed Money mode) — the amount each trade risks when you prefer a fixed figure.
- Max lot cap (safety) — a hard limit on the size of any position.
- Max trades/day (0 = unlimited) — optional daily limit.
System profile
This is a long-term system. It looks for quality trades rather than quantity, so there will be periods when one or more strategies do not trade. That is normal: each strategy only enters when its conditions are met.
Full transparency: in the backtest, the worst losing streak was 8 consecutive trades ($194 lost on the test account at 1% risk). Losing streaks like that are a normal part of this system's statistics.
Installation and use
- Attach the EA to one chart, for example GBPJPY H1. One chart runs all three strategies.
- In the SYMBOLS group, type your broker's exact symbol names, including the suffix (for example GBPJPY.a and USDJPY.a). The two GBPJPY strategies each have their own symbol input. If a name does not match, that strategy stays out and the Experts tab tells you which one.
- In MONEY MANAGEMENT, choose the risk mode and the risk per trade.
- Enable AutoTrading. That's it: the EA does the rest.
Recommendations
- A Hedging account with low spreads on GBPJPY and USDJPY.
- Fast execution and, ideally, a VPS for 24/5 operation.
- Recommended minimum deposit: $1,000 (the EA scales the lot size to your balance).
- Test first on a demo account to confirm your symbol names and the behavior with your broker.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
One of the strategies does not open any trades.
First check that its symbol is spelled exactly as in your broker's Market Watch: the Experts tab reports any symbol it cannot find. If the name is right, the strategy is simply waiting for its conditions.
Can it be long and short on GBPJPY at the same time?
Yes. The long and the short GBPJPY strategies are independent and can each hold a position. That is why the portfolio needs a Hedging account: on a Netting account the broker keeps a single net position per symbol and the two strategies would interfere with each other.
Does it keep positions over the weekend?
The two GBPJPY strategies close their positions on Friday evening. The USDJPY strategy can keep a position over the weekend, always with its Stop Loss and Take Profit on the server.
Can I run it together with other EAs on the same account?
Yes. Every strategy of the portfolio uses its own magic number and only manages its own trades.
Trading involves risk and can result in the loss of your capital. Test the EA on a demo account before using it live. Backtest results are not real trading results and do not guarantee future performance.
