How we test

Backtests run on 100% real ticks from January 2010 to June 2026, with commission, slippage and swap deducted from every trade and data aligned to broker server time. The images show backtest results on historical data, not live trading.

The backtests were run in the MetaTrader 5 Strategy Tester with this EA, version 2.4, with the default inputs. The EA sets take profit and break-even far enough to cover the costs of each trade: in our backtests with modelled commission, slippage and swap, on a live account with the commission and swap charged by the broker. In the Strategy Tester on your broker's gold symbol the EA uses the costs charged by the tester, so the results will differ from the images.

Requirements

Symbol: XAUUSD / GOLD. Timeframe: any, the strategies always read H1 bars. The EA sets its own chart colours.

H1 history: at least 5,900 H1 bars of gold loaded in the terminal. With a shorter history some breakout levels are searched on fewer bars or skipped, so trades can differ from the backtest.

Account: ECN / raw spread recommended, hedging account (on a netting account the trades of the 8 strategies are merged into a single position). Higher spreads reduce the results.

Minimum balance: 1,000 USD for 0.01 lots (leverage 1:100 or higher).

VPS recommended. For the news filter, add the address shown in the "Copy this URL to MT5 WebRequest" input to Tools > Options > Expert Advisors > Allow WebRequest.

Settings

Money management

  • Money Management Method: Fixed Lot (uses Base / Fixed Lot), Capital Step (e.g. 0.01 lots per 1,000 USD) or Risk % (lot calculated from the risk on the stop loss)

  • Risk % per trade: Risk % method only. The default is 1.0; the yearly chart in the images uses 0.40. If the calculated lot is below the broker's minimum lot, the minimum lot is used, so the risk can be higher than set

  • Base / Fixed Lot: starting or fixed lot size

  • Capital step: Capital Step method only

Execution

  • Entry Execution Mode: pending orders (held by the EA and sent to the broker when the price is within 50 USD of the entry; when the terminal is closed or the EA is removed or restarted, including a change of inputs or timeframe, it deletes them, but orders already at the broker only if the market is open) or market execution (orders not visible to the broker)

  • Exit Execution Mode: visible SL/TP (sent to the broker) or hidden SL/TP (kept by the EA, not by the broker: the terminal must stay running)

  • Max Spread points: maximum spread in the broker's points, market execution only. 40 points are 0.40 USD with 2-digit gold quotes but 0.04 USD with 3-digit quotes: raise the value on 3-digit quotes (0 disables the check)

  • Trailing update step: in USD of gold price (0.25 = 25 cents)

  • Wait minutes after market open: delay before the first orders of the day

  • Friday Broker closing hour: from this broker hour on Friday the EA closes its open positions and deletes its pending orders on the chart symbol; manual trades and trades of other EAs are not touched. Default 23; 24 or 25 disables it

News filter

  • Enable News Filter: when the pause starts before selected USD high-impact news (employment, inflation, Fed and interest rate releases), the EA closes its open trades and deletes its pending orders, then opens no new trades until the pause ends. Off by default and not active in the Strategy Tester

  • Pause minutes before news / Pause minutes after news: length of the pause, default 60 and 120

  • Copy this URL to MT5 WebRequest: the news address to allow in the terminal

Strategies and panel

  • S1_Enable to S8_Enable: switch each strategy on or off. A strategy switched off also stops managing its open trades: no trailing, and in hidden SL/TP mode no stop loss or take profit
