TrendLadder — adaptive trend indicator with a multi-timeframe panel
PURPOSE
TrendLadder shows the trend direction as a clean "step" line. While the market is just noise, the line stays put; it moves only when price makes a meaningful, confirmed move. This lets you see at a glance who is in control — buyers or sellers — and when the trend has really changed.
MT5-version: https://www.mql5.com/en/market/product/203073
WHAT YOU SEE ON THE CHART
- Step line: green — uptrend, red — downtrend, gray — direction not yet determined.
- Gradient candles: colour intensity shows trend strength. The farther price is from the line in the trend direction, the more vivid the candle; as price returns to the line, the colour fades toward gray.
- Optional fill between price and the line — shows how much "room" the trend has.
- Arrows: a Buy arrow below the candle when the trend turns up, a Sell arrow above the candle when it turns down.
HOW TO USE
- Trend filter: trade only in the direction of the line colour.
- Entries on arrows: the arrow appears when the direction changes. For reliability, rely on the arrow of a closed bar — this is what alerts are based on.
- Pullbacks: in a trend, price periodically returns to the line; the line works as dynamic support or resistance.
- Stop-loss and trailing: the line level is a convenient reference for a protective stop.
- Several timeframes: the panel shows direction on all selected timeframes. For example, take M15 signals when H1 and H4 point the same way.
- Sideways markets: if the line flips colour often or stays gray for long, it is better to stay aside.
SETTINGS
Group "Trend engine" — the core of the trend calculation
- Efficiency window (bars) — length of the window (in bars) used to judge how clean and directional the market is. Larger — smoother, slower reaction; smaller — faster and more sensitive.
- Fast deviation window (bars) — short window for assessing volatility. A smaller value makes the line adapt to the market faster.
- Slow deviation window (bars) — long window for assessing volatility. A larger value makes the line more resistant to temporary spikes.
- Applied price — the price the indicator is built on (Close, Open, High, Low, Median, Typical, Weighted).
Group "Noise filter" — protection from false signals
- ATR period — ATR period; ATR is the unit for distances in the other settings.
- Minimum step (ATR multiple) — the minimum distance in ATR that price must travel before the line can move. Larger — a calmer, more "stepped" line.
- Jump filter (ATR multiple) — threshold for an abnormally large candle (news, spikes). Such candles do not move the line. A smaller value makes the filter trigger more often.
- Choppy market threshold (efficiency) — threshold for choppy, directionless markets. The higher the value, the stricter the indicator becomes in unclear conditions: fewer false signals, but possible delay.
- Flip buffer (ATR multiple) — extra margin in ATR to confirm a reversal. Larger — fewer false reversals, but the arrow appears later.
Group "Look" — appearance
- Uptrend colour / Downtrend colour / Neutral colour — colours for the up, down and undetermined states.
- Paint candles by trend strength — paint candles with a gradient by trend strength (the chart's standard candles are hidden and restored when the indicator is removed).
- Candle colour smoothing (bars) — smoothing of candle shade changes. Larger — smoother.
- Fill between price and step line — enable the fill between price and the line.
- Fill strength (%) — intensity of the fill.
Group "Flip arrows"
- Show flip arrows — show reversal arrows.
- Arrow distance (ATR multiple) — offset of the arrow from the candle, in ATR.
Group "Alerts (on closed bar arrow)"
- Popup alert — alert window in the terminal.
- Push notification — notification to your phone (a MetaQuotes ID must be set in the terminal).
- Email alert — an email (email must be configured in the terminal).
Alerts are sent once, after the bar closes, if an arrow has formed on it. The text contains the symbol, timeframe, direction and close price, e.g.: "TrendLadder | EURUSD H1 | BUY (uptrend) | close 1.08520".
Group "Panel" — multi-timeframe panel
- Show panel — show or completely disable the panel.
- Start collapsed — start with the panel collapsed.
- Panel size — panel size: Auto adapts to the chart window size and screen resolution, or a fixed scale of 75–200%.
- Panel theme — panel colour theme: Dark or Light. You can also switch it right on the panel with the button in the header.
- Panel corner — chart corner for the initial panel position.
- Panel X offset (px) / Panel Y offset (px) — panel offsets from the chosen corner.
- Panel reads closed bars only — the panel shows the state on closed bars (more stable, no changes inside a bar).
- Panel refresh period (sec) — how often the panel updates timeframe data.
- Bars per timeframe for panel — how many history bars to use on each timeframe for the panel.
Group "Panel timeframes"
- Show M1 … Show MN1 — which timeframes the panel shows at start. You can also toggle them by clicking the buttons on the panel itself.
THE PANEL: WHAT THE DATA MEANS
- Header: overall bias across the selected timeframes, e.g. "UP 4/5" — four of five timeframes are rising. "MIXED" — opinions are split evenly.
- Buttons M1…MN1: turn timeframes in the list on or off. A highlighted button means the timeframe is shown.
- TF: the timeframe. The current chart timeframe is highlighted in yellow.
- Trend: direction on that timeframe — UP, DOWN, FLAT (not yet determined, usually at the very start of history). "loading..." means the timeframe data is still loading.
- Dist/ATR: distance from price to the line in ATR units. Plus — price above the line, minus — below. A value near zero means price is at the line and the trend may change soon; a large value means a strong trend but price is far from the line, so chasing an entry is less favourable.
- Bars: how many bars the current direction has lasted. A small number — a fresh trend or recent reversal; a large one — a mature trend.
- Bottom: the number of timeframes Up / Down / Flat and a colour bar of the ratio. The more of one colour, the stronger the agreement between timeframes.
- The "–" / "+" button in the header collapses and expands the panel. The panel can be dragged by its header; its position and state are remembered when you change the chart timeframe.
