Swing Failure Pattern Volume Filter
Swing Failure Pattern Volume Filter is a MetaTrader 5 indicator designed to identify bullish and bearish Swing Failure Patterns using confirmed swing levels, price rejection and optional lower-timeframe volume validation.
A Swing Failure Pattern occurs when price trades beyond a previous swing high or swing low but closes back inside the level. This type of structure is often studied as a liquidity sweep, stop hunt, failed breakout or rejection setup.
Unlike a basic Swing Failure Pattern detector, the indicator can also analyze lower-timeframe volume inside the failure candle and filter patterns according to how much volume occurred outside the failed swing level.
How It Works
The indicator first detects structural swing highs and swing lows using the configurable Swing Depth.
A swing is confirmed one bar after its candidate candle.
Once a valid swing exists, the indicator monitors price for a failure pattern.
Bearish Swing Failure Pattern
A bearish SFP is detected when:
- A confirmed swing high exists.
- The current High trades above the swing high.
- The current Open remains below the swing high.
- The current Close finishes below the swing high.
- Optional lower-timeframe volume validation passes.
This represents a failed attempt to remain above the previous swing high.
Bullish Swing Failure Pattern
A bullish SFP is detected when:
- A confirmed swing low exists.
- The current Low trades below the swing low.
- The current Open remains above the swing low.
- The current Close finishes above the swing low.
- Optional lower-timeframe volume validation passes.
This represents a failed attempt to remain below the previous swing low.
Lower-Timeframe Volume Validation
Volume validation can be disabled or used as an additional SFP filter.
For a bearish Swing Failure Pattern, the indicator calculates the percentage of lower-timeframe volume generated while lower-timeframe Close values are above the failed swing high.
For a bullish Swing Failure Pattern, it calculates the percentage of lower-timeframe volume generated while lower-timeframe Close values are below the failed swing low.
The calculated percentage can then be filtered using one of two modes:
Volume Outside Below Threshold
The pattern is accepted when the percentage of volume outside the swing is less than or equal to the selected Volume Threshold.
Volume Outside Above Threshold
The pattern is accepted when the percentage of volume outside the swing is greater than or equal to the selected Volume Threshold.
The default threshold is 25%.
Volume Validation can also be disabled completely.
Automatic Lower Timeframe
When Automatic LTF is enabled, the indicator derives a lower timeframe from the current chart timeframe using the Auto Divider parameter.
The default Auto Divider is 50.
When Premium Mode is disabled, the minimum validation timeframe is M1.
MetaTrader 5 does not provide the same native second-based chart periods available on some other platforms, so lower-timeframe calculations are resolved to supported MT5 periods.
Pattern Structure
Each valid Swing Failure Pattern can display several structural elements directly on the chart.
Swing Line
Marks the swing high or swing low that price attempted to break.
Confirmation Line
Marks the opposite price extreme between the original swing and the Swing Failure Pattern.
For a bearish SFP, this is the lowest Low between the swing high and the failure candle.
For a bullish SFP, this is the highest High between the swing low and the failure candle.
Swing Failure Wick
Highlights the portion of the SFP candle that extends beyond the original swing level.
SFP Label
Marks the detected Swing Failure Pattern directly on the chart.
Pattern Confirmation
A bearish SFP becomes confirmed when price closes below its Confirmation Line.
A bullish SFP becomes confirmed when price closes above its Confirmation Line.
If confirmation occurs after the original SFP candle, a separate directional confirmation marker is displayed.
Pattern Invalidation
An active bearish setup becomes invalid if price closes above its failed swing high.
An active bullish setup becomes invalid if price closes below its failed swing low.
An active pattern is also stopped after more than 500 bars from its original swing.
If an unconfirmed setup becomes invalid, its temporary pattern structure is removed.

These settings are a practical starting point and can be adjusted according to the instrument, timeframe and trading method being analyzed.

Controls the historical depth used to identify structural swing highs and swing lows.
Bullish SFP
Enables or disables bullish Swing Failure Pattern detection.
Bearish SFP
Enables or disables bearish Swing Failure Pattern detection.
Volume Validation
Validation
Selects no filter, volume outside below threshold, or volume outside above threshold.
Volume Threshold
Defines the percentage threshold used by the lower-timeframe volume filter.
Automatic LTF
Automatically derives the lower timeframe from the current chart period.
Auto Divider
Controls how aggressively the automatic lower timeframe is reduced from the chart timeframe.
Manual LTF
Defines the lower timeframe when automatic selection is disabled.
Premium Mode
Allows the automatic calculation to request a lower target resolution before it is mapped to a supported MT5 timeframe.

The indicator does not automatically open or manage trades.
Users can combine SFP structure with their own trend analysis, market structure, support and resistance, risk management or additional confirmation methods.
Markets and Timeframes
The indicator does not contain a hard-coded trading symbol.
It can therefore be tested on different MetaTrader 5 symbols and chart timeframes.
Exact behavior can vary between instruments, brokers and timeframes, particularly when volume validation is enabled.
Volume Data
The indicator uses real volume when the MT5 symbol provides it.
If real volume is unavailable, tick volume is used.
Volume data can differ between brokers, especially for Forex and CFD instruments. As a result, lower-timeframe volume validation results can also vary between trading servers.
Current Candle and Repaint Information
The Swing Failure Pattern conditions evaluate the currently forming candle.
A live pattern can therefore appear or disappear before that candle closes.
When volume validation is enabled, the validation percentage can also change as additional lower-timeframe volume is generated during the current candle.
Swing pivots require structural confirmation, but the current SFP candle itself remains live until it closes.
For this reason, the indicator should not be described as fully non-repainting.
Performance
Swing Failure Pattern Volume Filter is designed for efficient MetaTrader 5 operation.
Historical structure is calculated during the initial load.
During normal real-time operation, the indicator processes only the newest chart data required by the active setup instead of recalculating the complete chart history on every tick.
When volume validation is enabled, lower-timeframe data is requested only when required by the validation logic.
The indicator does not require DLL files, WebRequest, external indicators or network connections.
Risk Management
A Swing Failure Pattern identifies price behavior around a previous swing level, but it does not guarantee that price will reverse.
Consider appropriate Stop Loss placement, position sizing and risk management when using SFP setups as part of a trading strategy.
