Crude Oil Trend Follower is a classic trend-following expert advisor for WTI crude oil, based on a moving average crossover (SMA 20/50) on daily candles — a simple, transparent approach with no black box.
How it works:
The system watches for a cross between a fast simple moving average (20 periods) and a slow one (50 periods) on daily candles. When the fast one crosses above the slow one, any open short position is closed and a long position is opened; when it crosses below, any open long is closed and a short is opened (the latter is off by default - see below). There is no fixed take profit: the opposite crossover signal itself is the exit, true to the classic moving-average system. As a complement, an initial stop loss and a "chandelier" trailing stop (based on the highest or lowest price reached since entry) are both ATR-based, so they adapt to crude oil's actual current volatility instead of using a fixed distance.
Direction filter - important:
In historical testing, the long side showed a real statistical edge (58.8% win rate versus the 25.9% needed to break even, given the system's TP/SL relationship), while the short side did not (29.4% win rate versus the 44.4% needed - a net loser over the tested period). That's why the EA ships with short positions disabled by default. You can re-enable them, but understand that changes the risk profile relative to the validated configuration.
Risk management:
Risk per trade is set as a percentage of current equity (RiskPercent), not a fixed amount - position size adjusts automatically as your account balance changes. If not even the broker's minimum lot respects the target risk, the trade is skipped rather than over-risking.
Configurable parameters:
- Fast/slow SMA periods, and the signal timeframe (Daily = validated version)
- Enable/disable long and short trades independently
- ATR period, initial stop loss multiplier, and chandelier trailing multiplier
- Risk per trade (% of equity) and the maximum allowed risk-overshoot factor
- Minimum stop-distance floor, on top of whatever your broker reports
This product trades at market, keeps at most one open position at a time, and is designed for your broker's WTI crude oil vs. US dollar pair (verify the exact symbol name before dragging the EA onto a chart).
