A Month Of Ranging Markets: What It Teaches About Any Strategy

A Bad Month Is Information. The Useful Part Is Working Out What Kind Of Information It Is.

This month, gold kept ranging. Day after day it pushed up, pushed down, and went nowhere. Breakout logic is built for moves that follow through, so when almost every session ranges, false breaks stack up and so do losing trades. That's what happened here, and it's worth looking at what a stretch like this does and doesn't tell you, about our EA and about any strategy you might be considering.

Markets Change Character

Markets move between trending and ranging, and most strategies are comfortable in one of the two. Nobody knows in advance how long a regime will last. A strategy built for trends can look brilliant for months, then struggle for weeks when the market stops committing to a direction. That isn't unusual. It's the normal cost of having a defined edge instead of an all-weather one.

What A Bad Regime Does Tell You

It shows you how a strategy behaves in its worst conditions. How deep does the drawdown go? Do the risk controls hold, so every loss stays the size it was supposed to be? Would your account have survived at your position size? Those are valuable things to learn, and they're far more useful than a pretty curve from friendly conditions.

What It Doesn't Tell You

One month is a small sample. It can't tell you the long-run edge is intact, and it can't tell you it's gone. It might simply be a hard regime, or it might mean the edge is weaker than hoped. A single month can't separate those two, which is exactly why we show everything and why position size matters so much.

A Question Worth Asking About Any EA

Instead of asking how much it made in good times, ask how bad its worst regime was, and whether your account could survive two of them in a row. If the answer is no, the size is too big, whatever strategy it is.

You can explore this yourself. Run the free demo in the Strategy Tester over a date range that includes sideways, choppy periods, and see how the system behaves when markets don't cooperate. $199 stays until October 31st, then $330. The free route through PU Prime has no deadline and runs on a live account, so keep it small.
