# Elastic Momentum Band - Momentum driven asymmetric channel

## Short description
> A channel deforming with momentum: the band favouring the move draws closer to the average, the opposite one moves away. It makes breaks in direction easier and counter breaks more selective.
### Overview
A symmetric channel around an average treats an upward break and a downward one as equivalent events. In reality they are not remotely equivalent: in a market with bullish momentum an upward break is plain continuation, while a downward break of the same size is a rare and far more significant event. Elastic Momentum Band embeds that asymmetry in the very geometry of the channel. Normalised momentum deforms the two bands in opposite directions: the one in the direction of the thrust moves closer to the average, the opposite one moves away. The result is a surface behaving like a stretched elastic, in which price slides easily towards the favourable band and must work much harder to reach the opposite one.
### How the calculation works
1. The centre line is an exponential average of period InpCenterPeriod, computed recursively.
2. Momentum over InpMomPeriod bars is normalised by dividing it by the ATR multiplied by the square root of its horizon, and clamped between minus one and plus one.
3. The upper distance is InpBaseWidth minus InpElasticity times momentum; the lower one is InpBaseWidth plus the same term.
4. Both distances are constrained not to fall below InpMinWidth, so the bands never collapse onto the centre line.
5. The distances are multiplied by the current ATR, so the channel also breathes with volatility as well as with momentum.
6. The centre line is coloured by the sign of the normalised momentum, making the direction of the deformation immediate.
### How to use it
- Trade breaks of the near band as continuations: they are statistically more frequent precisely because the channel moved closer.
- Treat reaching the far band as a rare and significant event: it requires a move against the dominant momentum.
- The far band is an excellent stop reference, because price reaches it only when the premise of the trade has broken down.
- Set InpElasticity to zero to obtain a classic symmetric channel and directly compare the two behaviours.
- Increase elasticity on strongly directional markets, reduce it on markets that constantly alternate: the parameter describes how much you trust momentum.
### Who it is for and on which timeframes
It suits traders working with channels and bands who have noticed the two sides do not behave alike. It works well from M15 to H4, where momentum has enough persistence for the deformation to make sense. On D1 the channel deforms more slowly and the edge narrows. It is also useful as a teaching tool, because it directly visualises something many traders sense without being able to measure: that the market offers different resistance in each direction.
### Practical example of reading a signal
On GBPUSD M30 momentum is clearly bullish: the upper band has moved closer to the average and now sits half an ATR away, while the lower one is three ATR out. Price breaks the upper band for the third time in two hours, continuing each time: these are continuations, not excessive extensions, and the channel says so by shortening the distance. In the afternoon a macro release hits and price falls. To reach the lower band, by now far away, it must travel six times the distance of the last upward break. When it touches it, the signal is strong precisely because the move won against the channel geometry.

## Advantages / strengths
- It embeds into the channel geometry an asymmetry the market genuinely displays and that symmetric channels ignore.
- The far band is a natural stop reference, because it is only reached once the premise of the trade has collapsed.
- The elasticity parameter allows a continuous transition from a symmetric channel to a strongly deformed one.
- No repaint, with explicit safeguards against geometric degeneration of the channel.
## Limitations and warnings
- If momentum reverses abruptly the channel deforms the other way within a few bars, and the band that was near suddenly moves away.
- The asymmetry can confuse traders used to traditional channels: width is no longer a direct measure of volatility.
- Six parameters are many for a channel indicator and require some experimentation before finding the right configuration for your instrument.
- In sideways phases momentum oscillates around zero and the channel breathes without providing any advantage over a symmetric one.
**No repaint:** values printed on a closed bar are never modified afterwards.
