Fabii Volatility Acceleration Index

See at a glance when volatility is speeding up before a move — and when it is fading into a dead market. Any pair, any timeframe. No repaint — signals are final on bar close. Try it free in the Strategy Tester before you buy.

▬▬▬ THE PROBLEM ▬▬▬

Most volatility tools tell you how big the range is right now. They do not tell you the one thing that matters for timing: is volatility accelerating or slowing down? You end up entering just as a move runs out of steam, or sitting out while a breakout is building. Reading raw ATR bar by bar is slow and subjective, and every market has a different "normal" range, so a fixed number never works everywhere.

▬▬▬ HOW IT WORKS ▬▬▬

The Volatility Acceleration Index compares short-term ATR against medium-term ATR and normalises the result by a long-term ATR. The output is a single signed oscillator:

Above zero — volatility is accelerating. Below zero — volatility is fading.

Because the reading is self-normalised, the same thresholds work on any symbol, from a quiet cross to a fast index. Colour zones make the state readable in a fraction of a second, and an optional higher-timeframe line confirms whether the larger trend agrees with what you see.

▬▬▬ WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT ▬▬▬

A plain ATR-difference histogram already exists for free. This one adds the piece that actually helps you trade it: a higher-timeframe confirmation line. When your entry timeframe shows acceleration AND the higher timeframe agrees, that is confluence — the setups you want to size into. When they disagree, you know to wait. That combination is what you are paying for.

▬▬▬ KEY FEATURES ▬▬▬

One-glance read: above zero accelerating, below zero fading. Higher-timeframe bias line confirms the move on a larger timeframe. Self-scaling design: the same thresholds work on any market. Four colour zones: fading, neutral, medium, strong acceleration. Adjustable short / medium / long ATR periods. Alert when acceleration enters the strong zone (popup, sound, push). No repaint — signals are final on bar close.

▬▬▬ INPUTS ▬▬▬

Parameter Description Default
Short ATR Period Fast ATR — recent volatility 5
Medium ATR Period Reference ATR 10
Long ATR Period Normaliser ATR 21
Threshold Low Neutral to medium acceleration 0.15
Threshold High Medium to strong acceleration 0.30
Higher Timeframe Confirmation timeframe (Current = off) Current
Zone Colours Fading / neutral / medium / strong Grey/Gold/Greens
Bias Line Colours Fading / accelerating Silver / Lime
Popup Alert On strong acceleration false
Sound Alert On strong acceleration false
Push Alert On strong acceleration false

▬▬▬ HOW TO USE IT ▬▬▬

  1. Add the indicator to any chart and timeframe.
  2. Set the Higher Timeframe input to a larger timeframe (for example D1 on an H1 chart) to turn on confirmation.
  3. Watch for the histogram to cross above zero — volatility is starting to accelerate.
  4. Take acceleration signals with more confidence when the higher-timeframe line agrees (both pointing to acceleration).
  5. Stand aside when the reading sits below zero — the market is losing energy.

Volatility tells you how much the market moves. This tells you which side is winning. Any pair, any timeframe, any market. No repaint. Free trial in the Strategy Tester. THE PROBLEM Volatility tells you how much the market is moving, but not which side is doing the moving. A rising ATR looks the same whether buyers or sellers are in control. So you are left guessing: is this expansion pushing up, or down? Most volatility tools stay silent on direction, and most directional tools ignore

THE PROBLEM Chop is expensive. It fakes a trend just long enough to trap you, then stops you out and moves on. You enter a "breakout" and it dies. You skip a real move after three fake trends. THE PROBLEM Raw ATR gives you a number — say 0.0040 — but that number means nothing on its own. Is 40 pips high for this pair right now, or perfectly normal? You can't tell without scrolling back through weeks of history in your head. So most traders either ignore volatility timing entirely, or size every trade
