Understanding Candlestick Pressure Beyond Bullish and Bearish

Traditional candlestick charts usually present price movement in a simple way: bullish candles and bearish candles.

While this is useful, the direction of a candle alone does not describe everything happening inside it.

Two bullish candles can close in the same direction while representing very different market behavior. One may have a strong body and limited rejection, while another may contain a long upper wick and a relatively weak body.

The same principle applies to bearish candles.

Body size, wick structure, rejection, and directional behavior can provide additional context about the interaction between buyers and sellers.

This is the idea behind the 7-State Candlestick System used by GAM Candles.

From Two Candle Colors to Seven Visual States

Instead of classifying candles only as bullish or bearish, the system separates candle behavior into seven visual states:

1. Bullish Strength

Represents bullish candles displaying stronger directional behavior and clear buying pressure.

2. Bearish Strength

Represents bearish candles displaying stronger directional behavior and clear selling pressure.

3. Bullish Reversal

Highlights candle structures with significant lower-wick rejection that may indicate a shift toward bullish pressure.

4. Bearish Reversal

Highlights candle structures with significant upper-wick rejection that may indicate a shift toward bearish pressure.

5. Bullish Weakness

Represents bullish candles where directional strength is reduced and buying pressure appears weaker.

6. Bearish Weakness

Represents bearish candles where directional strength is reduced and selling pressure appears weaker.

7. Neutral / Doji

Represents periods where neither side demonstrates clear directional control, including hesitation and relatively balanced candle structures.

The objective is not to predict what the next candle will do.

The objective is to make the behavior of the current and previous candles easier to interpret visually.

Why Wick and Body Structure Matter

A candlestick contains more information than its closing direction.

The body represents the relationship between the open and close, while the wicks show price movement beyond the candle body during that period.

A large directional body can indicate stronger directional movement.

A pronounced lower wick can indicate rejection from lower prices.

A pronounced upper wick can indicate rejection from higher prices.

A small body relative to the overall candle range can indicate hesitation or reduced directional commitment.

By evaluating these characteristics together, candles can be organized into more meaningful behavioral categories rather than simply being classified by direction.

A Visual Language for Price Action

The purpose of the seven-state approach is to create a consistent visual language.

Instead of repeatedly inspecting each individual candle manually, a trader can visually distinguish between:

Strength → Reversal → Weakness → Neutrality

This becomes particularly useful when examining sequences of candles.

A single candle provides limited information. A sequence of changing candle states can provide additional context about how price behavior is developing.

For example, a transition from directional strength into weakness and rejection is visually different from a sequence that continues to display directional strength.

This does not automatically create a trading signal, but it can make changes in price behavior easier to recognize.

Using the System with Price Action and Market Structure

The seven candle states are not intended to replace market structure analysis.

They can instead be used as an additional visual layer alongside concepts such as:

  • Market structure
  • Liquidity
  • Support and resistance
  • Order blocks
  • Breakers
  • Price rejection
  • Supply and demand
  • Smart Money Concepts (SMC)

Context remains important.

A reversal-type candle appearing randomly in the middle of a range does not necessarily carry the same analytical significance as similar rejection appearing around an important structural or liquidity area.

The candle state provides information about candle behavior. The trader still determines how that information fits into the broader market context.

Works Across Different Timeframes and Markets

The same candle-classification approach can be applied across MetaTrader 5 chart timeframes.

This allows the visual system to be used for different trading styles, including scalping, intraday analysis, and higher-timeframe market evaluation.

It can also be applied across different markets available through MetaTrader 5, including Forex, Gold, Indices, Crypto, and Commodities.

The interpretation should always remain appropriate to the instrument, timeframe, volatility, and trading methodology being used.

GAM Candles

🔗GAM Candles was developed to implement this seven-state concept directly inside MetaTrader 5.

Rather than requiring traders to manually evaluate every candle, the indicator analyzes candle characteristics and automatically applies the corresponding visual state directly to the chart.

The goal is simple:

Make candle behavior easier to see without adding unnecessary complexity to the trading environment.

GAM Candles is designed as a visual analysis and confirmation tool. It does not generate guaranteed outcomes or predict future market movements.

It should be used alongside proper market analysis, risk management, and a defined trading methodology.

Final Thoughts

Candlesticks already contain information about directional movement, rejection, strength, and hesitation.

The challenge is presenting that information in a way that can be interpreted quickly across an entire chart.

The 7-State Candlestick System organizes these characteristics into a structured visual framework:

Bullish Strength • Bearish Strength • Bullish Reversal • Bearish Reversal • Bullish Weakness • Bearish Weakness • Neutral

The purpose is not to replace traditional candlestick analysis.

It is to make that analysis faster, clearer, and more visually structured.
