Daily loss limit (daily drawdown) on MT5: why it breaks by accident, and how to lock the day

A daily loss limit is simple on paper: lose X today and you stop. In practice it can end a challenge without the trader ever deciding to break it. Three things tend to happen.
1. The floating loss is forgotten. Many firms count the daily drawdown on equity, not closed trades. A position that is down counts immediately, before you close it.
2. The day starts at a different time than you think. Many firms count the day from a reset on the server clock, not from your local midnight. A trade open over the reset carries its floating loss into the new day.
3. One more trade. After a losing streak, the next trade is the one that crosses the line.
What helps is a rule that does not depend on willpower at the worst moment: something that watches equity every tick and stops the day for you.
How to set a hard stop on MT5
- Decide your number before the session, in money or as a percent of the start-of-day balance.
- Find out when your firm's day resets, in server time.
- Decide whether floating P/L counts (for most prop rules it does).
- Leave a small buffer: gaps and slippage can carry a loss past any limit.
We built a free utility that does exactly this: Spectar Daily Loss Limiter. When today's loss reaches your limit, it closes your positions, deletes pending orders and closes any new trade until the next reset. It never opens trades and gives no signals.

It is a discipline tool: it cannot guarantee closing at the exact limit, and it does not guarantee passing any evaluation. Trading leveraged products is high risk and you can lose your entire capital.
