How to choose a forex Expert Advisor for MT5: ten checks before you buy

Before you buy an Expert Advisor, spend ten minutes on these ten checks. They separate a tested engine from a pretty equity curve, and they work on any EA, including ours.

The ten checks

  • 1. Real-tick backtest. Look for "Every tick based on real ticks" and history quality close to 100%. Modelled ticks flatter scalpers and grids.
  • 2. Drawdown before profit. Check it on equity, not only on balance. Ask whether you would keep the EA running through that drop.
  • 3. A public live signal. On MQL5, growth and drawdown are calculated by the platform. A backtest is a claim, a live signal is evidence.
  • 4. The strategy family. Trend, mean reversion, grid, martingale and scalping fail in different ways. If the description only says "AI", move on.
  • 5. Costs and delay. Spread, commission, swap and a realistic order delay (for example 500 ms) decide whether an edge survives.
  • 6. Length and months. Several years with trends, ranges and shocks. Count the positive months and read the worst one.
  • 7. How the risk is sized. Fixed lot, percentage risk and lot growth give very different results. Know which one made the headline.
  • 8. Account requirements. Leverage, minimum deposit, symbol, timeframe and hedging or netting must match yours.
  • 9. The demo. The MQL5 Market lets you run a demo in the Strategy Tester before buying. Use it, and read the seller's updates and comments.
  • 10. Start small. Run it on a demo or a small account and compare the first weeks with the backtest for the same period.

One habit that saves money

Reproduce the number yourself. Take the demo, copy the settings from the report, and run the same period. If your result does not match the one on the sales page, you have learned something before spending a cent.
