A Gold Expert Advisor should be judged on how it controls risk and how openly it explains itself, not on the shape of a backtest curve. The MQL5 Market lists hundreds of EAs for XAUUSD, and many product pages look alike. This checklist gives you eight questions that separate a product you can evaluate from one you can only hope about.

None of the questions require programming skills. Most can be answered from the product page, the comments and the free demo in the Strategy Tester. At the end, I apply the same eight questions to my own EA, Fusion EA Master, so you can see what a complete answer looks like.

Questions 1 to 4: how the EA trades and controls risk

1. Is the trading logic explained?

You do not need the source code, but you should know what makes the EA enter. A good description names the indicators or conditions, the timeframes and the role of each filter. If the page only says "advanced algorithm" or "AI" without saying what it does, you cannot judge when it should work and when it should not.

Look for: named entry conditions, timeframes, and inputs that match the description.

2. How is risk structured per trade?

This is the most important question. Check three things:

  • Martingale, grid or averaging. These methods add or increase positions after a loss. They can show smooth results for a long time and then lose a large part of the account in one move. The MQL5 Market lets sellers declare these types on the product, so check the product's type and description.
  • Stop loss on every trade. A stop loss set at entry defines the maximum planned loss of the trade. Without one, the loss is open-ended.
  • Number of open positions. One position per symbol keeps exposure simple. Several stacked positions multiply it.

Look for: a clear statement on martingale and grid, a stop loss on every trade, and the maximum number of positions.

3. How is position size decided?

A fixed lot means the same size on a 500 USD and a 50,000 USD account, and the same size whether Gold is calm or volatile. Risk-based sizing calculates the lot from a percentage of the account and the stop-loss distance, so the money at risk per trade stays under control.

Look for: a risk-percentage option and an explanation of how the lot is calculated.

4. What stops a bad day from becoming a bad month?

Even a sound system has losing streaks. Limits above the single trade cap the damage: a maximum daily loss, a maximum number of trades per day, or a reduction in size after consecutive losses.

Look for: daily limits you can set yourself, and size that goes down after losses, never up.

Questions 5 to 8: how you can verify it

5. Can you test it fully before you buy?

Every Expert Advisor on the MQL5 Market has a free demo that runs in the MetaTrader 5 Strategy Tester. Use it properly: "Every tick based on real ticks" mode, XAUUSD data from your own broker, and a period long enough to include different market conditions. Set files published by the seller save you time and show you how the seller intends the EA to run.

Look for: set files in the comments and clear testing instructions.

6. Is the evidence presented honestly?

A backtest shows how rules would have behaved on past data. It is not a trading result. The MQL5 Market rules do not allow sellers to present backtests as real trading results, or to promise or hint at profits. Live monitoring through the MQL5 Signals service and reviews from buyers add evidence that a backtest cannot.

Look for: backtests labelled as backtests, live signals if available, and reviews that describe real use.

7. Will it fit your broker?

Gold conditions differ between brokers: spread, commission, contract size, tick value and even the symbol name. An EA that ignores these can trade very differently from its backtest.

Look for: a maximum spread setting, distances you can adjust to your broker, and notes on symbol names.

8. Is there support and a history of updates?

You are buying a tool you will use for months. Check the "What's new" tab for recent versions, and read the comments to see whether the seller answers questions. On the MQL5 Market, support should happen in the product comments or through MQL5 private messages.

Look for: recent updates, answered comments and support on MQL5 itself.

Warning signs on a product page

Some signs suggest that you should test with extra care, or look elsewhere:

  • Promises of fixed or guaranteed returns. No trading system can guarantee a monthly result.
  • A perfectly straight backtest curve with no losing periods. Real strategies have drawdowns. A flawless curve often means the settings were fitted to past data.
  • No word on martingale, grid or averaging. If the page avoids the subject, test how the EA behaves after several losing trades in a row.
  • No stop loss, or a stop loss far larger than the take profit. Many small wins can be erased by one large loss.
  • Support only outside MQL5. If you must contact the seller elsewhere to make the product work, ask why the information is not on the product page.

None of these signs proves that a product is bad. Each one is a reason to test longer and with smaller size.

How Fusion EA Master answers the 8 questions

Fusion EA Master is my Expert Advisor for XAUUSD on MetaTrader 5, currently at version 4.2. Here is how it answers the same checklist.

Question Fusion EA Master
1. Logic explained H1 EMA50 trend filter, M15 RSI confirmation and a signal score based on EMA distance, RSI and nearby support or resistance. Optional ADX, DXY, round-number and tick-imbalance filters. Explained step by step in my blog guide.
2. Risk per trade No martingale, no grid, no averaging. Stop loss and take profit on every trade. One position per symbol and magic number.
3. Position size AutoLot from your risk percentage, the stop-loss distance and the symbol tick value, or a fixed lot.
4. Daily limits Maximum daily loss, maximum trades per day, and lot reduction after consecutive losses.
5. Testing before buying Free demo for the Strategy Tester. Set files in the comments: the default H1/M15 configuration and an M1 alternative.
6. Evidence Evaluation is through the free demo and your own tests. No live monitoring signal is published at this time.
7. Broker fit Maximum spread setting, ATR-based or fixed SL/TP, and checks of the broker stop level and margin before each entry.
8. Support Product comments and MQL5 private messages. Version 4.2 updated in October 2026.

The answer to question 6 is deliberately plain. Until a live signal exists, the most reliable evidence is the test you run on your own broker's data.

Conclusion

Before you buy any Gold EA, answer the eight questions: logic, risk per trade, position size, daily limits, testing, evidence, broker fit and support. A product that answers them clearly gives you what you need to make your own decision.

If you want to apply the checklist to Fusion EA Master, download the free demo, load a set file from the comments and run it on your broker's real ticks. Questions are welcome in the product comments or by MQL5 private message.

Trading leveraged instruments such as Gold involves substantial risk of loss. Backtests and past results do not guarantee future performance. Test on a demo account first, and only trade with capital you can afford to lose.
