Watching a gold trade move into profit is the easy part. Deciding how much room to give it-and how much profit you are prepared to give back-is harder.

This October 26 XAUUSD example follows three SELL positions through a simple management sequence: move the stops to entry, then TP1, then TP2. When gold rebounded, the positions closed with $856.20 in displayed profit.

The useful lesson is in the decisions between the signal and the exit.

October 26: trading around $4,000

Reuters reported gold recovering above $4,000 as softer oil eased inflation concerns ahead of the Federal Reserve meeting, while expectations of higher interest rates constrained the upside. That was a mixed backdrop, with room for both recovery attempts and renewed selling.

On the broker’s M5 chart, a push above $4,020 faded and selling accelerated toward $4,000. The trade followed that local decline rather than relying on a one-way forecast for the entire day.

Royal Aurum Confluence displayed a SELL plan with Entry at 4011.17, initial SL at 4016.40, and five progressive targets. TP1 was 4005.94, followed by TP2 at 4000.71.

Three 0.30-lot positions were opened at 4009.89, 4010.16 and 4010.62. By this screenshot, TP1 was marked HIT and floating profit totaled $791.40.

The stops were still at 4016.40. The trade was profitable, but the original risk remained.

Having the levels visible made the next decision concrete: where should protection move if the positions stayed open?

The first adjustment brought each stop to its position’s actual entry price: 4009.89, 4010.16 and 4010.62.

These differed from the indicator’s reference Entry because the execution prices differed.

Floating profit had eased to $681.60. Moving the stops to entry reduced the exposure to a reversal, although costs and slippage still matter. The positions remained open for further downside.

All three stops were then lowered to 4005.94-the TP1 level.

Floating profit stood at $813.00. A rebound to the revised stops would now target a profitable exit, while continued selling could carry the positions toward TP2.

The terminal’s S/L column confirms the adjustment. The indicator still shows 4016.40, the original setup stop. Its reference plan remains visible while the trader manages the actual orders.

Gold continued below $4,000. TP2 changed to HIT, and the stops followed to 4000.71.

The three positions showed $1,116.30 in floating profit, with TP3 at 3995.48 still marked WAIT.

This was the trade-off: leave room for another leg lower, while accepting that a rebound would surrender some open profit before triggering the stops.

Gold bounced, and all three positions closed at 4000.71, at 16:48:35 broker time.

History displays profits of $275.40, $283.50 and $297.30, totalling $856.20.

That was less than the floating profit in the previous screenshot. Leaving a trade open for continuation means accepting that difference.

No partial closes were used. Protection moved in stages until the rebound triggered the final exit.

Notice that the panel still reads ACTIVE. It tracks the indicator’s setup, independently of these account positions. Closing the orders at a modified stop does not mean the original setup has reached its own completion condition.
