The Golden Trend – Installation, Broker Testing and Settings
The Golden Trend was developed specifically for XAUUSD (Gold). Before using the EA on a live account, we strongly recommend testing it with the same broker and account type that you intend to use for live trading.
The Golden Trend is a market-driven system. It works directly with Gold price movement and broker price data, so results can vary between trading environments. This is why broker testing is an important part of using the EA.

1. Test Your Broker First
Before live trading, we recommend performing two checks:
- Run a historical test in the MetaTrader 5 Strategy Tester.
- Install the EA on a demo account with the same broker and account type you intend to use.
For historical testing, use Every tick based on real ticks whenever the broker provides sufficient real tick history.
For the first broker test, use Fixed risk with 0.01 lot. Fixed lot sizing gives the clearest representation of the underlying strategy because changes in account balance do not affect position size.
Do not expect a trade immediately after attaching the EA. The strategy waits for its own market conditions and may remain without a position until a suitable setup appears.
The Golden Trend opens only one position at a time. It does not use Martingale, Grid, Hedging or averaging into losing positions. Every position is managed with Stop Loss and Take Profit protection.
2. Broker Selection Matters
We have tested The Golden Trend across a number of different brokers and XAUUSD trading environments.
One of the more interesting results of this testing is that the strategy produced surprisingly similar fixed-lot statistics across most brokers, even though their Gold spreads, tick feeds and trading conditions can be very different.
At the same time, there were clear exceptions. Some broker environments produced a considerably weaker statistical edge than others.
Differences between brokers can include:
- Tick structure and price-feed behaviour
- Normal spread and temporary spread expansion
- Slippage and execution
- Swaps and commissions
- Trading sessions and server time
- Symbol and contract specifications
A larger spread does not automatically mean that a broker is unsuitable. During our testing, some brokers with relatively wide XAUUSD spreads still produced good long-term results.
For this reason, we recommend evaluating the actual strategy result on your broker rather than selecting or rejecting a broker based on spread alone.
3. How We Evaluate Broker Results
For broker comparison we primarily use the Fixed 0.01 lot test. This removes the effect of balance-based position sizing and makes the underlying trading performance easier to evaluate.
Two of the main statistics we use are:
Profit Factor (PF)
Shows the relationship between total gross profit and total gross loss. A value above 1.00 means that gross profits exceeded gross losses during the tested period.
Recovery Factor (RF)
Shows how much Net Profit was generated relative to the maximum drawdown. For this strategy, Recovery Factor is particularly useful because it indicates how efficiently the trading edge was converted into profit.
As a general guideline for The Golden Trend:
- RF above 5.0 – Very Good
- RF from approximately 3.5 to 5.0 – Good
- RF from approximately 3.0 to 3.5 – Requires additional review
- RF below 3.0 – Normally not recommended
Recovery Factor should not be considered alone. We also check Profit Factor, drawdown, number of trades, length of available history and general stability of the result.
4. Our Broker Testing
The following table summarizes some of our Fixed 0.01 lot tests. Available historical periods differ between brokers, so this table should not be treated as a strict ranking. It is intended to demonstrate how the same core strategy can behave in different broker environments.
| Broker | PF | RF | Relative Equity DD | Trades | Assessment |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vantage | 1.09 | 6.48 | 3.42% | 4,991 | Very Good |
| Ultima | 1.10 | 5.47 | 3.68% | 4,051 | Very Good |
| Monaxa | 1.10 | 5.38 | 3.83% | 3,814 | Very Good |
| XM | 1.08 | 4.15 | 4.46% | 5,047 | Good |
| PU Prime | 1.07 | 3.88 | 4.59% | 5,257 | Good |
| VT | 1.07 | 3.81 | 4.06% | 4,755 | Good |
| OANDA | 1.07 | 3.81 | 3.98% | 4,920 | Good |
| ATC | 1.02 | 0.29 | 5.59% | 1,847 | Not Recommended |
| FXPro* | 1.11 | 5.39 | 2.75% | 2,731 | Strong shorter-period result |
| IC Markets* | 1.20 | 3.44 | 1.80% | 648 | Limited historical sample |
* FXPro and IC Markets currently have substantially shorter historical samples in our testing and therefore should not be directly compared with the longer-period results.
One of our longer Vantage tests covers approximately 2022–2026 and includes both weaker and stronger Gold market periods. We include screenshots of this test as an example of how the strategy behaved over a longer and less selective historical period.
The important point is not that every broker produces exactly the same result. It is that most tested environments preserved a similar positive statistical edge, while clearly unsuitable environments can also be identified.
5. EA Input Settings
The Golden Trend intentionally has a relatively small number of user settings. The internal Renko calculations, trend logic and market filters are part of the core strategy and do not require manual optimization by the user.
Trading
Allow Buy
Enables or disables BUY trades.
Allow Sell
Enables or disables SELL trades.
Long TP
Take Profit distance used for BUY positions.
Long SL
Stop Loss distance used for BUY positions.
Short TP
Take Profit distance used for SELL positions.
Short SL
Stop Loss distance used for SELL positions.
TP and SL values are expressed as XAUUSD price distances. For example, a value of 20.0 represents a $20.00 Gold price movement from the relevant entry price.
Spread Protection
Use Spread Blocker
Enables or disables additional spread protection for new entries.
Max Spread
Defines the maximum permitted XAUUSD spread for a new position.
The normal XAUUSD spread can differ substantially between brokers. Therefore, the same maximum spread value is not necessarily appropriate for every broker.
If your broker normally trades Gold above the selected Max Spread value, the EA may reject a large number of otherwise valid signals. In this case, either increase the value to suit the normal trading conditions of the broker or disable the additional spread blocker while performing your broker test.
The purpose of the spread protection is primarily to avoid abnormally poor execution conditions and temporary spread expansion, rather than to define whether a broker itself is good or bad.
Risk Management
Risk Management
Selects between Fixed and Flex position sizing.
Fixed uses the same requested lot size for every trade.
For broker testing, we recommend:
Fixed Lot = 0.01
This is the simplest way to compare your result with the fixed-lot examples shown in this article.
Flex automatically adjusts the position size according to account balance.
Flex Balance per 0.01 Lot
Defines how much account balance corresponds to 0.01 lot.
For example, with a value of 2000:
$2,000 balance = approximately 0.01 lot
$10,000 balance = approximately 0.05 lot
$20,000 balance = approximately 0.10 lot
2000 can be used as a starting value for testing, but it is not mandatory. A larger value results in lower trading volume, while a smaller value results in higher trading volume and higher risk.
We recommend first confirming that the underlying Fixed 0.01 strategy performs satisfactorily on your broker. Flex sizing can then be tested separately according to your own risk preference.
The final trading volume is adjusted to the lot step and symbol specifications supported by the broker.
The EA does not automatically increase a requested position to the broker's minimum lot size if doing so would exceed the calculated risk. If the calculated volume is below the broker's permitted minimum, the trade can be skipped.
Panel
Show Panel
Shows or hides The Golden Trend information panel on the chart.
Show Panel In Tester
Controls whether the panel is displayed during Strategy Tester runs. Leaving this disabled is normally preferable for faster historical testing.
6. Recommended Testing Procedure
- Select your broker's XAUUSD symbol.
- Use the longest reliable historical period available.
- Select Every tick based on real ticks where available.
- Use Fixed risk and 0.01 lot.
- Run the backtest and record Profit Factor, Recovery Factor, drawdown and number of trades.
- Compare the result with the general ranges shown above.
- If the fixed-lot result is satisfactory, test the EA on demo.
- Only then consider switching to Flex sizing.
Do not evaluate the test only by Net Profit. A longer test with moderate profit and controlled drawdown can be more useful than a spectacular result produced during one unusually favourable market period.
7. Important Notes
The Golden Trend is not designed to generate extraordinary profits from every market condition. It is a trend-oriented system with a relatively small statistical edge that is intended to accumulate its advantage over time.
Its strongest periods normally occur when Gold develops strong directional movement and increased volatility. During sideways or mixed markets, the objective is primarily to remain controlled until stronger opportunities return.
The system has been tested across very different broker environments. Our tests show that a wide spread alone does not necessarily prevent the strategy from working, while other differences in the broker feed can materially affect the final result.
This is why we prefer a simple approach: test the strategy on the broker you actually intend to use and let the statistics decide.
Past backtests, demo results and live results cannot guarantee future performance. Trading conditions can change, and the same strategy can behave differently across brokers and market periods.
