Reference Candle Breakout EA — session breakout trading with full risk control
This EA automates a classic session-breakout strategy built around a single reference candle each day (e.g. the 3:30 candle) on any timeframe you choose — 5, 15, 30, 60 minutes or higher.
Tested on GOLD 30m 3:30am icmarket .Good Results with 1:2RR 1 trade a day.
Every day the EA reads the High, Low and Close of your chosen reference candle, then trades the breakout in one of two ways:
- Confirmation mode — waits for the next candle to close beyond the reference candle's High or Low, then opens a market order in the breakout direction.
- Pending-order mode — places a Buy Stop and Sell Stop straddling the reference candle immediately, so you catch fast breakouts without waiting for a close. Whichever order fills first, the other cancels automatically (OCO).
You can also trade off the 50% midpoint of the reference candle instead of its full range, for earlier, more aggressive entries.
Built-in risk management:
- Risk per trade in fixed $ or % of account balance
- Reward:risk ratio fully adjustable (default 1:2)
- Break-even that triggers at an editable % of the distance to take-profit
- Trailing stop with adjustable start distance and step
- ATR filter to automatically skip abnormally large reference candles
- One-trade-per-day option to avoid overtrading
- Auto pip/point normalization for 3- and 5-digit brokers, adjustable slippage and spread filter, and a configurable magic number — works across brokers without code changes
Every parameter is exposed in the Inputs tab, so you can tune the reference time, timeframe, entry style, risk model and trade management to your own market and broker without touching the code.
Recommended: test on a demo account first and optimize the ATR filter and RR ratio for your instrument.
Confirmation mode: the reference candle's range is marked, and when the following candle closes below the low, a sell fires with the stop above the reference high and take-profit at double the risk.
Next, the pending-order (50%) mode with automatic OCO cancellation:
Pending-order mode: a Buy Stop and Sell Stop are placed at the reference candle's 50% midpoint the moment it closes. Here price breaks upward, fills the buy, and the sell stop is auto-cancelled (the crossed-out marker) — no manual OCO management needed.
