A small, rule-based edge from the Japanese calendar.

In Japan, the 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th and the last day of the month are called "Gotobi". Many Japanese importers settle their dollar payments on these days, so dollar demand tends to gather before the Tokyo fixing at 9:55 Japan time. This EA sells USDJPY and EURJPY right after the fixing and closes at 11:00 Japan time. On other days it does nothing.

How it trades

  1. 9:30-9:54 Japan time: checks the spread of both symbols every second to learn the usual spread of the day.
  2. 9:55-9:59: sells USDJPY and EURJPY. The spread widens for a moment at 9:55, so each symbol is entered when its spread has settled.
  3. At +5 pips the stop loss moves to break-even.
  4. 11:00: closes any remaining trades (12:00 can be chosen).

When a Gotobi day falls on a weekend or a Japanese holiday, it trades on the business day before. Japanese holidays are built in. Japan time is calculated from your PC clock and time zone, so the broker's server time does not matter.

Risk control

  • A 30-pip stop loss is sent with every order. No averaging down, no martingale, one position per symbol.
  • The lot is calculated so that if both symbols hit the stop loss, the loss is 1.5% of the capital (adjustable 0.1-3.0%).
  • Free margin is checked before every order.
  • About 6 trading days and 12 trades a month. Each trade lasts one hour at most.

Backtest (MT5, real ticks, January 2018 to September 2026, default inputs, JPY account 200,000)

  • Net profit +100.6%, profit factor 1.99, 1,244 trades, win rate 55.9%, maximum equity drawdown 7%.
  • Every year from 2018 to 2025 ended in profit; 2026 was a small profit through September.

Past results do not guarantee future results.

Account requirements (important)

Each trade aims at a few pips, so the cost decides the result. Use an account where "spread + round-trip commission" around 10:00 Japan time (1:00 GMT) is about 1.0 pips or less on USDJPY and 1.3 pips or less on EURJPY. Up to 2.0 / 1.8 pips it still works with about half the profit. Wider than 2.5 pips is not recommended. The EA measures the cost before every entry and skips a symbol on days when it is too wide. A round trip of 7 USD per lot is about 1 pip.

Inputs

  • Symbols to sell (default USDJPY,EURJPY; broker suffixes are matched automatically)
  • Close time 11:00 or 12:00 Japan time
  • Stop loss (default 30 pips), risk per round (default 1.5%), trading capital (0 = balance)
  • Max spread at entry, break-even trigger, round-trip commission, entry condition
  • Magic number

Setup

Attach to one chart only (USDJPY M1 is recommended) and show USDJPY and EURJPY in Market Watch. Keep MetaTrader running from 9:30 to 11:00 Japan time (0:30 to 2:00 GMT); a VPS is recommended. Turn on "Set time automatically" in Windows.

Strategy Tester

The MT5 tester trades both symbols from one chart; set the symbols your broker uses. The MT4 tester can trade only the chart symbol, so test on a USDJPY chart. If the set symbols cannot be traded at all in a test, the EA trades the chart symbol with the same rules so that the test still runs.

This EA places real orders. Trading involves risk. It does not guarantee profits.
