A young start-up lost a $30 million business
The story of Chinkle at first resembled the movie The Social Network. Startup founder Lucas Duplan was nineteen when he came up with the idea for a financial app that sends money to nearby devices using high-frequency sound. Thanks to connections at Stanford (Lucas is finishing his degree in Computer Science) he managed to get a $30 million investment - an exorbitant amount for an application with nothing behind it, just an interface concept and a demo video. Soon after, Chinkle hired 70 new people.
Trouble began soon after the sales team collected a hundred thousand subscription requests for Chinkle. To mark the occasion, the company paid the distinguished employees an "alco-bus" - and the next day, all its passengers were sacked. Former Netflix CFO Barry McCarthy was hired to stabilise the situation. However, this did not save Chinkle employees from a new wave of layoffs: just before Christmas last year, the departments of development, operations, and HR were completely laid off. McCarthy himself left the company in February.
By now the company has lost about $20 million of investor money and the application remains an unstable concept: the branded sound easily mimics a blender running in the distance, the application takes endless hours to download and drains the battery almost instantly. Perhaps Clinkle will remain a beautiful concept that we will never see.
