How Far Gold Usually Moves in a Day: A Free D1 and H4 Range Indicator for MT5

A familiar mistake on gold: a take profit placed where price rarely travels in a single day, or a stop placed so close that ordinary movement takes it out before the idea has a chance. Both come from the same missing number: how far price usually moves in one day, or in one 4-hour bar.

Kingdom Range 90 is a free tool from EA Kingdom that puts that number on the chart. For XAUUSD and BTCUSD it draws two lines for the current day (D1, orange by default) and two lines for the current 4-hour bar (H4, blue by default). Each pair marks the range that has historically held both the high and the low of that bar about 90% of the time.

A range is set once, when its bar opens, from the previous close and a locked ATR(14) multiple calibrated for each symbol and timeframe. The lines do not repaint during the bar.

An example from 23 October 2026

On XAUUSD (IC Markets) the D1 range for 23 October was 3,921.44 - 4,126.04, 5.08% wide. The last 4-hour bar of the day had an H4 range of 3,955.55 - 4,043.45, 2.20% wide. Gold closed the day at 3,997.08, inside both ranges.

Five ways to use the lines

  • Targets: keep them inside today's range. On 23 October, a target above 4,126.04 was outside the D1 range. In the test years, the high and the low of a XAUUSD day both stayed between the D1 lines on 87.6% to 89.2% of days.
  • Stops: a stop placed well inside the range is within reach of the day's ordinary movement. If a stop has to sit further away, a smaller lot keeps the amount at risk the same.
  • Near a line: when price is close to a line, little of the usual range remains for the day or for the 4-hour bar. An entry that chases price toward the line is a trade into the edge of that range.
  • Through a line: a move past a line points to an unusual day, often one with major news. Treat it as a reason to cut risk, not to add to it.
  • Width: the width in percent works as a volatility gauge, 5.08% for D1 on 23 October. The wider the range, the larger the ordinary swings at the same lot size.

Set it up and check it yourself

After you install Kingdom Range 90 from the MQL5 Market, drag it from the Navigator onto an XAUUSD or BTCUSD chart, on any timeframe from M1 to D1. The inputs:

  • Show D1 range and Show H4 range turn each pair of lines on or off.
  • D1 color, H4 color, Line width (1 to 5) and Text corner change only how it looks.
  • History bars (0 to 200) adds the ranges of earlier bars, so you can count on your own chart how often price stayed between the lines.

There is no input for the multiples: they are fixed per symbol and timeframe. The text block in the chart corner lists both ranges, each with its lower and upper limit in the symbol's digits and its width in percent, together with the note "Historical ~90% range (high and low). Not a signal, not a promise."

Tested coverage

The multiples come from IC Markets data for 2020 to 2023. In the test years, which played no part in the calibration, the share of bars with both the high and the low inside the range was:

  • XAUUSD D1: 89.2% in 2024, 87.6% in 2025, 88.9% from January to October 2026
  • XAUUSD H4: 90.0% in 2024, 90.4% in 2025, 90.4% from January to October 2026
  • BTCUSD D1: 86.9% in 2024, 90.7% in 2025, 90.8% from January to October 2026
  • BTCUSD H4: 89.3% in 2024, 90.4% in 2025, 90.6% from January to October 2026

In short, 86.9% to 90.8%. These are historical statistics, not a promise. Kingdom Range 90 is not a buy or sell signal either: the lines say how far, not which way.

Published figures as of 29 October 2026

These are the figures on the product page on the day of this post: Kingdom Range 90 version 1.0, free; tested coverage 86.9% to 90.8% (2024 to October 2026, IC Markets data).

When the 90% figure applies

  • News is not part of the calculation, and price is more likely to move outside the lines on days with NFP, FOMC, CPI or other major releases.
  • The calibration uses IC Markets bars with New York close server time (GMT+2/GMT+3). On a server with another clock, daily and 4-hour bars open at other moments; the indicator then shows a note, because the 90% coverage does not apply there.
  • Feeds differ slightly between brokers (spread, server time), so coverage can shift.
  • Only XAUUSD and BTCUSD are calibrated, broker suffixes such as XAUUSD.r included. On any other symbol the indicator shows a short note and draws nothing.
