European Shares Swung Between Gains and Losses Today

  • European shares swung between gains and losses today, in an uneventful session ahead of Yellen’s speech this evening. US equities opened slightly higher.

  • The ECB’s policy on working off bad bank loans may be extended to smaller lenders not directly supervised by the ECB, chief supervisor Nouy said, in an attempt to reduce the pile of soured credit.

  • Brent crude oil prices dropped below $49/barrel, moving further away from the key $50/barrel level, as the stronger US dollar weighed. Gold futures remain under pressure too, trading around $1218/ounce, nearing the $1211‐1206 resistance area.

  • Norwegian central bank governor Olsen has been reappointed to a second and final six‐year term, the government announced today, saying he conducted the job of central bank governor in an excellent manner.

  • Later today, Fed Chairwoman Yellen will speak at Harvard. On Monday, US markets are closed in observance ofMemorial day and UK markets are closed for the Spring Bank Holiday.
