PropFlow: two forced flows with a real counterparty, traded on a calendar.
Some market participants have to trade at a fixed moment, whatever the price. PropFlow trades two of these flows: index funds on rebalancing days in the FTSE 100 closing auction, and Japanese companies buying dollars at the Tokyo fix in USDJPY. Few trades, flat the same day, a protective stop on every position.
Setup: attach PropFlow to your broker's FTSE 100 chart and, if you want the second module, to a USDJPY chart. Choose your risk per trade. The calendars are built in.
Try it first: run it in the strategy tester on your broker's FTSE 100 or USDJPY symbol with "Every tick based on real ticks". On other symbols the tester runs a demo schedule (one trade every weekday) so you can watch the order handling.
Module 1: index rebalancing days (FTSE 100 chart)
- A flow, not a chart pattern. When the FTSE 100, STOXX or MSCI change their indices, passive funds must trade the changes at the closing price. On that evening the deleted stocks are still in the index and are sold into the auction. PropFlow sells the FTSE 100 late in the cash session and buys back after the auction print.
- Measured before it was built. I searched on 2015 to 2022 data (63 event days, +8.3 basis points per event day after costs) and then tested once on a separate holdout from January 2023 to June 2026 that no search had touched: 27 event days, +11.5 basis points per event day, 22 of 27 positive. On real broker ticks the same days came to +11.9 basis points. Out of about 150 intraday pattern families in my research, this is the only one that passed a global multiple-testing correction.
- About eight trades a year. FTSE 100 and STOXX quarterly reviews (third Friday of March, June, September, December) and the MSCI index reviews (published dates up to August 2028). UK bank holidays are skipped, there is no auction on those days. You can add or skip dates in the inputs.
Module 2: the Tokyo fix (USDJPY chart)
- The mechanism. Japanese banks set their customer exchange rate at 09:55 Tokyo time, and importers buy dollars at that fix, most of all on gotobi days (the 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th and the month-end). On Japanese holidays there is no fix. PropFlow trades three rules: month-end, gotobi days (into the fix and after it) and Japanese holidays.
- The evidence, and its limit. On real broker ticks from April 2023 to June 2026 the three rules made +5.1, +4.5 and +5.6 basis points per trade before commission. This module did not pass my global multiple-testing check, and its rules run as a pre-registered forward test until September 2027. Switch each rule off in the inputs if you only want the index module.
What both modules share
- Protective stop on every trade, placed at the broker with the order: 0.60 % from entry on the FTSE 100, 0.80 % on USDJPY (adjustable). In the historical data the stops were reached on at most about 2 % of the trades.
- Risk per trade in % of equity at the stop, or fixed lots. Margin, volume and spread are checked before every order.
- Broker independent timing. Event times are calculated in London and Tokyo time from the UTC clock of your computer, so the server time zone of your broker does not matter in live trading. In the tester you choose your broker's server clock.
- Restart safe. One trade per rule and day, also after a restart. An open position is recognised and closed at its scheduled time.
- No martingale, no grid, no averaging. Hedging and netting accounts.
Where it fits
Any MT5 broker with a FTSE 100 CFD whose price follows the closing auction, and any USDJPY feed. A VPS is recommended so the time exits happen on time. The gains per trade are small (roughly 10 basis points on the index days, 2 to 6 on the Tokyo rules), so PropFlow is a building block next to your own trading, not a replacement for it. Quick start
- Open your broker's FTSE 100 chart (UK100, FTSE100, ...), attach PropFlow, set the risk per trade.
- Optional: attach PropFlow to a USDJPY chart for the Tokyo fix module.
- Enable AutoTrading and keep the terminal running on the event days, ideally on a VPS.
- Check the panel: it shows the next event day for the chart.
