US500: The Fed Pauses — Is the S&P 500 Preparing for a Deeper Correction?
Following the announcement, the index made a sharp move above 7,770 points, attracting breakout traders. However, the upward momentum quickly faded, and the price reversed below this level.
This price action may indicate that large market participants used the increased trading activity and incoming buying pressure to take profits on existing long positions.
Market Reaction: A Breakout That Failed
The move above 7,770 points initially looked like an attempt to extend the bullish trend. However, the inability to consolidate above this level changed the short-term picture.
Elevated trading volumes suggest that the breakout attracted significant market participation. Yet, instead of developing into a sustained upward movement, the price reversed.
Such behavior is often associated with a liquidity grab: the market moves beyond an important level, triggers breakout orders and stop orders, and then reverses in the opposite direction.
This does not automatically confirm a trend reversal, but it does indicate that buyers are currently facing stronger resistance.
Alphabet Earnings Add Pressure
Additional selling pressure came from the negative market reaction to Alphabet's (Google) earnings report. At one point, the company's shares fell by more than 10%.
Weak sentiment around major technology companies can affect the broader US stock market, particularly the S&P 500, where large-cap technology stocks have a significant influence.
Combined with persistent inflation concerns and the Federal Reserve's cautious position, this has weakened the bullish momentum.
The market now needs a new catalyst to support another attempt at reaching higher levels.
Key US500 Technical Levels
Several price zones deserve attention in the coming trading sessions:
-
7,770–7,845 — resistance zone and previous local highs. A sustained breakout above this area could restore buying momentum.
-
7,577 — important structural support. Holding above this level would preserve the broader bullish market structure.
The reaction around these levels may help determine whether the current decline is simply a correction or the beginning of a more significant bearish phase.
My Market Outlook
As long as the S&P 500 remains above 7,577, I consider the broader bullish structure intact.
However, the upward movement is becoming increasingly difficult. Failed breakouts, weakening momentum, and negative reactions to corporate earnings suggest that buyers are losing some of their previous strength.
If the index continues to struggle below the 7,770–7,845 resistance zone, the probability of a deeper correction may increase.
On the other hand, a confident recovery above resistance would indicate that buyers are still capable of controlling the market.
For now, I would pay particular attention to price behavior around 7,577 and the market's ability to reclaim the previous highs.
What Comes Next for the S&P 500?
The key question is whether the recent liquidity grab was simply a temporary shakeout of breakout buyers or an early warning of a broader market reversal.
The next reaction at major support and resistance levels should provide more information about the balance between buyers and sellers.
