Your trade history knows your hidden rules

Every trader has rules written somewhere: risk 1%, no trading during the news, stop after three losses. But there is a second set of rules that nobody writes down, because we don't know they exist. They are hidden in our own results.

Maybe you make money on every SELL on one pair and lose steadily on another. Maybe your first trades of the day are good and the sixth and seventh give everything back. Maybe the trade you open right after a loss is almost always the worst of the day. None of this shows up in the balance: it only shows up when you split the history the right way.

Why the total result hides the problem

A month that closes at +3% looks fine. But the same +3% can be made of +9% on two symbols and -6% on a third one you should not trade at all. Or of good trades in the morning and revenge trades in the afternoon. The total mixes everything together, and the details that would make you a better trader disappear.

A trading journal helps, but filling it by hand takes time and is never complete. The information, however, is already there: MetaTrader keeps every trade, with symbol, direction, time, lots, result. It only needs to be read in the right way.

The questions worth asking your history

  • Which symbols and which direction really make money, and which ones only look busy?
  • At what hours and on which days do your trades work, and when do they lose?
  • What happens after a loss? Is the next trade better, worse, or bigger?
  • How many trades a day are too many? From which trade of the day do results turn negative?
  • Is your stop loss, take profit and break even right? What would have happened with a different one?

The answer to each question must be in money, not just in percentages: "you lose 1 900 USD on the trades after the fifth of the day" is a sentence that changes behaviour; "win rate 47%" is not.

Test the change before applying it

Once you find a weak point, the temptation is to change everything. Better to test first. With 1-minute price history you can replay your past trades with a different break even, take profit or stop loss and see the result each rule would have given on the same trades. If the new break even is clearly better, you apply it; if not, you keep what you have.

Use it before the next trade, not after

The most useful moment is not the end of the month: it is the second before you press BUY or SELL. A simple traffic light helps: green if your history says this kind of trade (symbol, direction, hour, day, position in your day) usually works for you, yellow if it is uncertain, red if it usually loses. It does not decide for you, it reminds you of what your own numbers say.

The tool I built for this

I added these analyses to my trade panel as the SAYON Coach, inside SAYON Orders Manager for MetaTrader 4 and 5:

  • hidden rules by symbol, direction, hour, day, after a loss and trade number of the day, with the result in money;
  • 9 charts of your history;
  • an optional traffic light before every trade;
  • 1-minute simulations of break even, take profit and stop loss, with one button to apply the better break even to your rules;
  • analysis of the panel's trades only or of the whole account, and test symbols can be excluded with one click.

In short

  • The total result hides the details: split your history by symbol, direction, hour, day and position in the day.
  • Measure every rule in money, not only in percentages.
  • Test a new break even, take profit or stop loss on past trades before changing it.
  • Check what your history says before the trade, not after.
