Loss limits are easy to read in a firm's rules and easy to lose track of during a busy day. This post follows one example account for two days and shows what Prop Floor Monitor puts on the chart at each step. The account and its trades are an example; the arithmetic is exactly what the indicator does.

The rules in the example

RuleSetting
Start balance$100,000
Daily loss limit5% of the higher of balance and equity at the reset
Maximum loss10%, trailing the equity peak
Reset17:00 New York time, daylight saving included

Day 1: two floors

At the start, both bases are $100,000. The daily floor is $95,000 and the maximum-loss floor is $90,000. The higher one counts, so the floor is $95,000 and the room is $5,000.

Day 2: a new peak lifts both floors

The day ends with equity at a new peak of $104,000 and the balance at $103,500. At the reset, the daily base is the higher of the two, $104,000, so the daily floor becomes $98,800. The trailing maximum-loss floor follows the peak to $93,600. The floor is now $98,800.

Mid-day: how close is it?

Equity drops to $100,200 during the day. The panel shows:

The panel, row by row

  • room to the floor: $1,400, set by the daily limit;
  • daily limit used: 73%, so 27% is left, and the room shows orange (between a quarter and a half left);
  • the day's equity low and the time it happened, and the countdown to the next reset.

Where the line goes

With 2 lots of gold open, a $1 move in gold is worth $200, so the $1,400 room is a $7.00 move against the position. A dashed line on the chart sits $7.00 below the current price: the price at which equity would reach the floor.

The reset clock

The daily reset follows the time zone you choose, with its clock changes. The reset moment was checked against the IANA time zone database at 18,688 moments from 2024 to 2027, with no difference.

Your firm decides

Prop Floor Monitor only displays; it never touches a position. Enter your own firm's limits, and treat the firm's own figures as the ones that count.
