How can you calculate risk per trade and choose a position size in MT5? Risk management starts not with choosing a lot size, but with deciding how much capital you are prepared to risk.

The Strifor Smart Lot Calculator is a MetaTrader 5 indicator that calculates position size based on a specified risk percentage and the distance to Stop Loss.

Risk Percentage and Position Size

Suppose your account balance is $10,000 and your risk limit is set at 1%.

In this case, the maximum planned risk is $100.

However, this amount alone does not determine the position size. The calculation also requires the distance to Stop Loss and the specifications of the trading instrument.

If Stop Loss is far from the entry price, the calculated position size decreases. If Stop Loss is closer, the calculated size may be larger.

The risk percentage is therefore the starting point, while the lot size is the result of the calculation.

How Strifor Smart Lot Calculator Works

The indicator includes several key parameters.

Deposit defines the capital amount. If set to 0, the current trading account balance is used.

RiskPercent specifies the risk percentage per trade.

StopLossPips is used in manual mode to specify the distance to Stop Loss.

Based on these inputs, the indicator calculates the position size.

Calculate Without Manual Math

Manual calculations can be performed using formulas, spreadsheets, or third-party calculators. However, for active traders, this adds another step between market analysis and trade execution.

Automated calculations help reduce the number of arithmetic operations and simplify trade preparation.

This is particularly useful when trading multiple instruments with different Stop Loss distances.

Chart-Based Mode

In Line Mode, calculations are performed directly on the chart.

The trader marks the entry point and Stop Loss level with horizontal lines. The indicator measures the distance between them and calculates the corresponding position size for the specified risk level.

This makes it easier to check how moving Stop Loss affects position size.

What Changes When the Trade Scenario Changes?

Suppose Stop Loss is initially placed relatively close to the entry point. Later, technical analysis suggests that the protective level should be moved farther away.

If the risk percentage remains unchanged, the calculated position size should decrease.

This illustrates why lot size should not be considered separately from the structure of a trade.

Tool Limitations

Strifor Smart Lot Calculator is designed to calculate position size. It does not analyze the market, predict price direction, or guarantee trade outcomes.

Calculations depend on the characteristics of the trading instrument and the broker’s specifications. When trading gold, oil, and indices, it is particularly important to check Tick Value and contract specifications.

Testing the indicator on a demo account is recommended before using it on a live account.
