Volume Profile Multi Period Profile MT4

Volume Profile: multi-mode, multi-profile, drawn on the price chart

The indicator draws a volume profile directly on the price chart, together with the Point of Control (POC) line, the Value Area (VAH and VAL) and optional peaks and valleys. Instead of reading volume in a separate bottom panel, the volume is shown at the price levels where it was traded, so price and volume can be read in one place.

What the indicator displays

  • POC (Point of Control) line: the price level with the highest traded volume within the profile range.
  • Value Area (VAH / VAL): the price band containing the configured percentage of the traded volume. The percentage is adjustable, 70% by default.
  • Profile bars: horizontal volume bars drawn at each price level of the range.
  • Peaks and valleys (can be switched off): local highs and lows of the volume curve, marked as reference support and resistance levels.
  • Profile outline (can be switched off): an outer envelope around the profile for a cleaner chart.
  • Up to 10 simultaneous profiles on the same chart, for comparing how volume was distributed across different periods.

Seven profile modes

  1. Visible Range: profiles the bars currently visible on the chart. Suitable for a quick read of the current range.
  2. Start Date to Now: profiles from a chosen date to the current bar. Suitable for tracking volume distribution since a specific event.
  3. Date to Date: profiles a fixed historical window.
  4. Bar Count: profiles the last N bars, a fixed window without date calculations.
  5. Trading Session: profiles only the bars inside the configured session hours. Suitable for intraday analysis with overnight bars excluded.
  6. Multi-Profile (Fixed): up to 10 profiles with a Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly or Yearly interval, for comparing volume distribution across consecutive periods.
  7. Multi-Profile (Time Range): up to 10 profiles, each on a custom time range (HH:MM to HH:MM), for intraday or custom window studies.

How traders commonly use it

  • The POC line marks the price level where the largest volume was traded in the selected range. Many traders use it as a reference level for the most accepted price of that range.
  • The Value Area bands show where most of the volume was traded. Levels outside the bands traded on thin volume and are visible at a glance.
  • Peaks and valleys of the volume curve are used as support and resistance references.
  • With up to 10 profiles on one chart, volume can be compared across days, weeks or custom windows, which shows whether volume is building at new price levels or staying near previous ones.

Feature set

The indicator combines features that are usually spread across several separate tools: seven profile modes, up to 10 simultaneous profiles, session filtering, multi-period profiles, peaks and valleys marking, a configurable Value Area percentage, and switchable POC line and outline. No DLLs are used and no external files are required.

Input parameters

Profile mode and window: profile mode, lookback days, bar count, start date, end date, session hours, multi-profile time window.

Multi-profile settings: interval (Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly, Yearly), maximum number of profiles shown (up to 10).

Calculation: price step (tick size), Value Area percentage (70 by default), bin width, maximum price levels, minimum volume percentage threshold.

Display, position and color: profile side (left or right), width, maximum history bars loaded, profile color, Value Area color, POC bar color, POC line color, peak color, valley color.

Display, lines: show POC line, show outer outline, outline minimum volume percentage, show peaks and valleys, line width.

Installation and setup

  1. Install the indicator in MetaTrader 4, via the Market tab in the terminal or by copying the file into the Indicators folder, and attach it to a chart. The default mode is Visible Range and works with default settings.
  2. Set the price step to match the symbol. This is a one-time setting per symbol, for example 0.0001 for five-digit forex pairs or 0.1 for some indices.
  3. Optionally change the Value Area percentage (70 by default).
  4. The POC line, Value Area and peaks and valleys are enabled by default.

Compatibility

MetaTrader 4. All timeframes. Works with any symbol available in the terminal, including forex, indices, cryptocurrencies, equities and commodities.

Notes and limitations

  • The price step must match the tick size of the symbol, otherwise the profile bars will not align with real prices. This is a one-time setting per symbol.
  • POC, VAH, VAL, peaks and valleys are drawn as chart objects (lines and bars). A separate bottom-panel histogram is not displayed.
  • A VWAP line is not drawn; POC is shown instead. A separate VWAP indicator from the author is available in the Market and can be used on the same chart.
