This is the user guide for Aurum Gold Portfolio, an Expert Advisor for gold (XAUUSD) on MetaTrader 5. The two set files mentioned below are attached at the end of this post.

1. How the strategy works

Instead of one strategy, the EA runs five independent breakout engines at the same time. Each engine watches a price channel: the highest high and the lowest low of its last N bars (support and resistance).

  • At each new bar an engine places a Buy Stop at the channel high and a Sell Stop at the channel low. Engines with a trend filter only place the order in the direction of their EMA. Unfilled orders are cancelled and refreshed at the next bar.
  • When one side fills, the other order of that engine is cancelled (OCO). Every order is sent with its Stop Loss and an ATR take profit; two engines also trail the stop.
  • Each engine holds at most one trade, so at most five positions can be open at once.
  • Four engines run on H4 bars that the EA builds itself in GMT from H1 data. Every broker therefore gets the same signals, whatever its server time zone. The fifth engine runs on H1 with half risk.

The five engines

  • E1 - H4, 20-bar channel, EMA 50 filter, SL 3.5 ATR, TP 4 ATR
  • E2 - H4, 30-bar channel, EMA 200 filter, SL 4 ATR, TP 6 ATR, trailing stop
  • E3 - H4, 15-bar channel, EMA 100 filter, SL 3 ATR, TP 4 ATR
  • E4 - H4, 20-bar channel, both directions, SL 3.5 ATR, TP 2 ATR, trailing stop
  • H1 - H1, 20-bar channel, EMA 50 filter, SL 3.5 ATR, TP 3 ATR, half risk

Never a grid, martingale, averaging or recovery lot. No DLL, no internet connection required.

2. Installation

  1. Buy or download the EA from the Market inside MetaTrader 5 (Navigator - Market - Purchased).
  2. Open one XAUUSD chart (any suffix: XAUUSD, XAUUSDm, GOLD...). The chart timeframe does not matter. One chart is enough for all five engines.
  3. Drag the EA onto the chart, enable "Algo Trading", and press OK. The panel appears on the chart.
  4. To use a preset: in the EA settings press "Load" and choose one of the set files below.

3. Risk setting: max allowed drawdown

You choose the drawdown you are willing to accept (default 10%). The EA turns it into the risk per trade: max DD / 20, so 10% gives 0.5% per trade. This keeps a safety margin over the worst drawdown of the full portfolio in the backtest (about 15 risk units). You can also choose a fixed % per trade or a fixed lot.

A trade is skipped when even the broker's minimum lot would risk more than 3% of equity (adjustable).

4. Settings (set files)

  • AurumPortfolio_Default.set (full version): max allowed drawdown 10%, daily loss limit 4%. Backtest Jul 2021 - Sep 2026 on 10,000 USD: +80.1%, profit factor 1.19, max drawdown 17.1%.
  • AurumPortfolio_PropFirm.set (full version): max allowed drawdown 6%, daily loss limit 3%, stop trading at 9% drawdown. Backtest on 100,000 USD: +40.3%, max drawdown 6.0%. Set the limits a little inside your firm's rules.

Reference test: 100,000 USD with a fixed 0.5% risk per trade: +77.9%, profit factor 1.20, recovery factor 5.53, 2,104 trades, win rate 60.0%, max relative drawdown 10.3%. By year: 2021 (Jul-Dec) -3.8%, 2022 +1.7%, 2023 +19.0%, 2024 +10.9%, 2025 +24.4%, 2026 (Jan-Sep) +10.8%.

Account size: 5,000 USD or more is recommended for the full portfolio, 25,000 USD or more for exact risk sizing on every engine. Below about 25,000 USD the broker's 0.01 minimum lot is larger than the requested risk on the H4 engines, so returns and drawdowns are both higher than the setting suggests (on 5,000 USD the default setting gave +190% with a 22.4% drawdown). On 1,000 USD the results were poor, so we do not recommend it for very small accounts.

5. Account protection

  • Daily loss limit: closes the EA's trades, cancels its orders and pauses for the day.
  • Optional drawdown stop from the equity peak.
  • Friday: orders are cancelled and no new ones are placed from 20:00 GMT, so nothing is filled in the weekend gap.
  • Spread, free margin, broker stop and freeze levels, order limits and trading session checks before every order. During the daily gold break the EA waits and retries when the market opens.

6. Time zone

The H4 bars are built in GMT. On a live account the EA reads your broker's server offset automatically. In the Strategy Tester the clock is simulated, so the EA detects the broker type from the weekly market open: brokers that open the week on Sunday are treated as GMT+0, the others as GMT+2/GMT+3 (New York close). If your broker uses another time zone, set "Broker server time zone" to Fixed and enter the offset. The panel shows the offset it uses.

7. How to test it yourself

  • Strategy Tester - Expert: Aurum Gold Portfolio - Symbol: XAUUSD - Model: "1 minute OHLC" or "Every tick based on real ticks" - Period: as long as your broker's history allows.
  • Use your own broker's data: spreads and history differ between brokers.
  • Expect losing periods. The second half of 2021 was negative and 2022 was almost flat. Past results do not guarantee future results.

8. Gold only

We tested the same engines on EURUSD, GBPUSD, USDJPY and BTCUSD. They lost money there, so the EA is recommended for XAUUSD only.

9. FAQ

Can I run it together with Aurum Trend Breakout or Aurum Range Breakout? Yes. Each EA uses its own magic numbers (Gold Portfolio uses 7726111-7726115). Keep the total risk of all EAs in mind.

Netting account? Supported.

Why are there no orders on the chart? Check the panel: an engine may be waiting for its trend filter, the spread may be too high, it may be Friday evening, the daily loss limit may be reached, or the minimum lot may be too large for the account.

Can I run fewer engines? Yes. "Engines to run" offers Full (5 engines), Balanced (4 H4 engines) and Conservative (2 H4 engines).
