ZigZag Confirmation EA – Smart Swing Trading with Risk Management

Overview

ZigZag Confirmation EA is an automated trading system for MetaTrader 5 designed to identify potential market swing points using the ZigZag indicator and trade confirmed reversal setups.

The EA combines swing-point analysis, configurable entry confirmation, stop-loss protection, trailing stops, daily profit and loss limits, and customizable trading-time filters to help traders implement a structured trading approach.

It is designed for traders who want to automate their strategy while maintaining control over risk settings and trading schedules.

Key Features

1. ZigZag Swing Detection

  • Identifies potential swing highs and swing lows using the standard MetaTrader 5 ZigZag indicator.

  • Configurable ZigZag Depth, Deviation, and Backstep parameters.

  • Adjustable confirmation candles before evaluating a trading opportunity.

  • Supports BUY and SELL setups.

Important: The ZigZag indicator may redraw recent swing points as new price data arrives. Confirmation rules can reduce premature entries but cannot eliminate repainting entirely.

2. Automated BUY and SELL Trading

  • Automatically evaluates potential trading opportunities.

  • Supports configurable BUY and SELL permissions.

  • Optional handling of opposite positions.

  • Option to restrict the EA to one open position at a time for its configured symbol and magic number.

3. Flexible Position Sizing

Choose between:

  • Fixed lot sizing — specify your preferred trade volume.

  • Risk-based position sizing — calculate trade volume using the configured risk percentage and stop-loss distance.

The EA checks broker volume constraints and available margin before attempting to place an order.

4. Stop-Loss Protection

  • Calculates the stop-loss relative to the detected swing point.

  • Configurable stop-loss buffer in points.

  • Checks broker minimum stop-distance requirements before placing trades.

The EA does not set a fixed take-profit target by default. Its trailing-stop functionality can help manage trades as price moves favorably.

5. Trailing Stop Management

  • Configurable trailing activation threshold.

  • Adjustable trailing distance.

  • Configurable trailing step.

  • Designed to progressively protect open-trade gains as price moves in the favorable direction.

6. Daily Profit and Loss Limits

Set daily profit and loss thresholds to pause new entries when the configured limit is reached.

Available options include:

  • Daily profit target.

  • Daily loss threshold.

  • Optional inclusion of floating profit and loss.

  • Optional closing of the EA's positions when a daily limit is reached.

  • Automatic reset of the daily pause on the next broker-server trading day.

Daily P/L calculations are filtered by the configured symbol and magic number rather than aggregating all account trades.

7. Trading-Time and Calendar Filters

The EA includes configurable restrictions to avoid selected trading periods.

Default performance filters can block new entries during:

  • Fridays

  • April, May and July

  • 08:00–08:59

  • 13:00–13:59

  • 17:00–20:59

These are broker-server times, not necessarily your local time. The filters can be enabled or disabled through the EA inputs.

The default restrictions are intended as configurable filters based on historical strategy observations. They do not guarantee improved future performance.

8. Chart Status and Journal Logging

Monitor the EA through:

  • Current trading status.

  • Trading-filter status and blocking reason.

  • Daily closed P/L and floating P/L.

  • Latest detected swing information.

  • Daily limit status.

  • Trade execution and error messages in the Experts/Journal tab.

9. Optional Telegram Notifications

When configured, the EA can send Telegram messages about trade entries and position closures.

Notifications can include:

  • Symbol and trade direction.

  • Trade volume.

  • Stop-loss and take-profit information.

  • Trade ticket or position identifier.

  • Opening or closing time.

  • Profit or loss information.

Telegram notifications are optional and require a valid bot token, chat ID, and the appropriate WebRequest permission in MetaTrader 5.

Inputs and Customization

The EA allows you to customize:

  • Signal timeframe.

  • ZigZag parameters.

  • Swing confirmation candles.

  • BUY and SELL permissions.

  • Position sizing and risk percentage.

  • Stop-loss buffer.

  • Trailing-stop parameters.

  • Daily profit and loss thresholds.

  • Trading days, months and hours to avoid.

  • Magic number and execution settings.

  • Chart status and diagnostic logs.

  • Telegram notifications.

Installation

  1. Download the EA source or compiled file supplied by the developer.

  2. Open MetaTrader 5 and select File → Open Data Folder.

  3. Place the EA in MQL5/Experts/.

  4. If required, compile the .mq5 file in MetaEditor.

  5. Attach the EA to your preferred chart.

  6. Configure the inputs according to your broker, symbol and risk preferences.

  7. Enable algorithmic trading and test the EA in the Strategy Tester before live deployment.

If the standard ZigZag indicator cannot be loaded, ensure ZigZag.ex5 is available in MQL5/Indicators/Examples/.

Recommended Usage

  • Test the EA on a demo account before using real funds.

  • Optimize parameters for the intended symbol btcusd and xauusd and timeframe 4 hours.

  • Verify broker-server time before enabling trading-time filters.

  • Check minimum lot sizes, tick values, spreads, execution rules and stop-level restrictions.

  • Use conservative risk settings and evaluate performance across different market conditions.

No particular timeframe, symbol or parameter combination guarantees profitability. Results depend on market conditions, broker execution, spread, commissions, slippage and configuration.
