Strategy Detective — Behavioral Strategy Analysis for MT5
How many times have you seen a strategy or Expert Advisor you would like to use, study, replicate, or develop — but had no clear idea how it actually works?
Strategy Detective is a behavioral analysis utility for MetaTrader 5 designed to help traders, researchers, and developers study how a trading strategy behaves in real market conditions.
It does not read or decompile another EA's source code. Instead, it observes trading activity, combines it with multi-timeframe market context, measures recurring patterns, and produces a structured HTML report based on observable evidence.

No source code required
You do not need to own the original EA or have access to its source code.
If you have access to the MT5 account where the strategy is running, and the positions and trading history are visible in the terminal, Strategy Detective can analyze that observable behavior.
This makes it useful for:

Analyze your own EA
Strategy Detective is also useful during EA development.
You can run your own trading EA on one chart and attach Strategy Detective to a second chart of the same symbol.
This allows you to analyze whether the EA is behaving as intended, including:
- actual entry conditions
- recovery spacing
- lot progression
- deep-level behavior
- timing between entries
- opposite-side exposure
- re-entry behavior
- volatility conditions
- higher-timeframe context
It can therefore be used not only for research, but also as a development and validation tool.
How to use Strategy Detective
If no other EA is running on the symbol:
- Open a chart of the symbol you want to analyze.
- Attach Strategy Detective to the chart.
- Configure the symbol and optional comment filter.
- Leave the utility running while trades occur.
- Generate or review the HTML report.
If another EA is already running:
- Keep the original EA on its existing chart.
- Open a second chart of the same symbol.
- Attach Strategy Detective to the second chart.
- Strategy Detective will observe the account's trades and market context independently.
- Review the generated report.
MetaTrader allows only one Expert Advisor per chart, so a second chart is required when another EA is already attached.
Account-only analysis
You can also use Strategy Detective when you do not have the original EA at all.
If you can log in to an MT5 account where the strategy is trading and the positions/history are visible, attach Strategy Detective to a chart of the relevant symbol.
The tool analyzes the visible account behavior directly.
No EA file is required.
Comment filter
If multiple strategies are trading the same account, the comment filter can be used to isolate trades that contain a specific text in their order or position comments.
For example:

If the filter is left empty, Strategy Detective analyzes all visible trades for the selected symbol.

Strategy Detective generates a local HTML report containing sections such as:

Directly visible in trading or market data.
Strongly Inferred
A repeated relationship supported by a meaningful number of observations.
Possible
A pattern that appears consistent but still requires more evidence.
Unknown
Not enough data is available to support a conclusion.
Freeze detection
One of the more specialized functions of Strategy Detective is the detection of potential freeze behavior.
A freeze candidate occurs when a recovery basket has already reached a deeper level, price continues moving beyond the estimated recovery spacing, but the strategy does not immediately add another level.
The tool records:
- side
- current recovery level
- duration
- adverse price movement
- M15 state
- M30 state
- H1 state
- ATR context
This can help identify whether deeper recovery behavior changes under specific trend or volatility conditions.
What Strategy Detective does not do
Strategy Detective does not:
- decompile Expert Advisors
- recover source code
- guarantee the exact internal logic of another program
- automatically clone another trading system
- guarantee profitable settings
- place trades
- modify trades
- close positions
It is a behavioral research and analysis utility.
Recommended use
The quality of the analysis improves as more trading events are observed.
A small number of trades may only reveal basic behavior. Larger datasets can provide stronger evidence regarding:
