Multi-Timeframe Support & Resistance Zone Analysis for Gold/XAUUSD with Cascading Zone Refinement
Defence Zone Engine Gold is an analytical Expert Advisor designed to identify, evaluate and display structural support and resistance zones, with primary calibration and runtime testing focused on Gold (XAUUSD).
Instead of simply displaying unrelated zones from several timeframes, Zone Engine can progressively refine a broader parent zone through two lower analysis timeframes. This creates a connected Parent → Refinement 1 → Refinement 2 hierarchy and helps traders examine where broader market structure and more precise lower-timeframe areas align.
The default Gold configuration is:
H4 → H1 → M15
The three analysis timeframes are configurable using H4, H1, M30, M15 and M5, while maintaining a strictly descending Parent → Refinement 1 → Refinement 2 hierarchy.
Zone Engine is an analysis and display tool. It does not automatically open, modify or close trades.
Multi-Timeframe Zone Analysis and Refinement
Zone Engine begins by identifying qualifying structural support and resistance zones on the selected parent timeframe. It then searches the configured lower timeframes for qualifying refinement zones that satisfy the engine's refinement rules.
A refinement is displayed only when a qualifying lower-timeframe zone is available. The engine does not force every parent zone to produce Refinement 1 or Refinement 2.
Depending on current market structure, a valid zone chain may therefore contain:
- Parent zone only
- Parent → Refinement 1
- Parent → Refinement 1 → Refinement 2
With the default configuration, a complete refinement chain is:
H4 Parent → H1 Refinement → M15 Refinement
Where the normal intermediate refinement path does not produce a qualifying zone, the engine can use its permitted lower-timeframe fallback logic to search for a valid refinement directly on the lower timeframe.
This cascading approach maintains the relationship between the broader parent structure and its qualifying lower-timeframe refinements rather than simply treating each timeframe as an independent collection of zones.
Zone Strength, Confidence and Fibonacci Confluence
Detected zones are evaluated using the engine's structural analysis and classified by zone strength.
Zone Engine also calculates a confidence score to provide an additional way of evaluating qualifying zones. Confidence is an analytical score produced by the engine and should not be interpreted as a probability of profit or a guaranteed trading outcome.
For the selected parent zone, the engine can evaluate Fibonacci confluence using the 38.2%, 50%, 61.8% and 78.6% retracement levels.
Qualifying Fibonacci confluence can contribute to the confidence assessment while remaining separate from the zone's structural-strength classification.
This allows structural strength, confidence and Fibonacci confluence to provide complementary information without treating them as the same measurement.
Chart Display and Dashboard
Zone Engine is designed to keep the relationship between selected zones visible while preserving the wider chart context.
Display features include:
- Support and resistance zone visualization
- Parent → Refinement 1 → Refinement 2 selected-chain display
- Complete parent-zone and compact refinement labels
- Structural zone classification
- Confidence information
- Dashboard
- Configurable support and resistance colors
- Alternate zone colors
- Automatic contrast handling
- Configurable dashboard position and presentation
The selected-chain display can be enabled or disabled according to the user's preferred chart layout.
Zone Alerts
Zone Engine can monitor displayed zones and generate alerts for important zone interactions.
Available alert events include:
- Zone Enter
- Zone Touch
- Zone Break
Alerts can be filtered according to zone strength and include a configurable cooldown period to reduce repeated notifications from the same zone interaction.
Supported notification methods include MT5 terminal popup alerts, optional push notifications and optional sound alerts.
Push notifications require the corresponding notification configuration in the MetaTrader 5 terminal.
Analysis Modes and Advanced Options
Zone Engine supports two approaches to the analysis snapshot.
Friday Snapshot uses the Friday-close analysis state, allowing the trader to work from a stable structural snapshot rather than continuously changing the analysis basis.
Dynamic Analysis uses the current analysis state when Friday Snapshot mode is disabled.
Additional options include fallback zone search, which can provide alternative qualifying candidates when the primary search does not produce the required zone set, and optional imbalance candidates as an additional analysis source.
These features can be enabled or disabled through the product inputs.
Timeframe Configuration
Zone Engine uses three configurable analysis levels:
- Parent Timeframe
- Refinement 1 Timeframe
- Refinement 2 Timeframe
Available selections are:
- H4
- H1
- M30
- M15
- M5
The hierarchy must remain strictly descending from the parent timeframe through the two refinement timeframes.
The default Gold configuration is:
- Parent: H4
- Refinement 1: H1
- Refinement 2: M15
H4 → H1 → M15 is the primary configuration used for the Gold/XAUUSD workflow.
The timeframe of the chart itself does not have to match the complete analysis hierarchy.

Intended Use and Broker Compatibility
Defence Zone Engine Gold has been developed and runtime-tested primarily around Gold/XAUUSD.
The engine reads the symbol of the chart on which it is attached rather than requiring a hard-coded XAUUSD symbol name, allowing for broker-specific symbol naming variations.
Testing has been performed primarily on IC Markets International and ELV8 environments using 2-decimal Gold pricing.
Broker specifications, price precision, historical data, spreads, trading-session data and symbol configuration can differ between brokers. As a result, zone calculation, refinement availability and other analytical behaviour may vary between broker environments.
The current release has not been validated for 3-decimal Gold pricing. Functionality on brokers using 3-decimal XAUUSD quotes should therefore not be assumed and may differ from the tested configuration.
The product's calibration and runtime evidence are primarily Gold-oriented. Equivalent analytical behaviour on other asset classes should not be assumed.
Zone Engine is intended to support a trader's own chart analysis and decision-making. It does not provide automatic trade execution and does not guarantee that a displayed zone will produce a particular market reaction.
