Why MT5 Strategy Tester Reports Do Not Match Prop Firm Rules
The standard MetaTrader 5 Strategy Tester calculates drawdown only against closed balance peaks or continuous equity. It does not account for daily midnight (00:00) loss resets, High-Water Mark (HWM) rules that lock a higher daily floor when trades remain open in profit at midnight, or real trading commissions missing on zero-commission demo servers. Because of this, many Expert Advisors (especially bots generated with AI tools) look profitable in backtests but fail daily drawdown limits on live evaluation accounts.
Prop Firm Drawdown and Code Leak Auditor reads your MT5 Strategy Tester HTML report and replays your trades across 1-minute (M1) historical bars. It shows the exact day, minute, and deal tickets where your strategy breached your selected rule template, both on the chart summary panel and in a detailed HTML report.
How to Use
- After running your backtest in the MT5 Strategy Tester, right-click inside the Backtest tab and select Report -> HTML to save the report into your terminal's MQL5\Files folder.
- (Optional) If you also want to check your EA code for look-ahead bar reading errors, copy your .mq5 file into the same MQL5\Files folder.
- Attach the utility to any open chart. The summary panel appears on the chart and the full 5-section report is saved as MQL5\Files\Audit_Report.html.
What It Checks
- Daily and Max Drawdown Simulation: Tracks midnight 00:00 balance/equity resets along with Static and Trailing maximum loss rules minute by minute. Separates confirmed breaches at M1 bar close from intra-minute wick risks. It does not stop at the first failure; it logs all breach events until the end of the backtest.
- Commission Injection and Balance Verification: Verifies all parsed deals against the final MT5 balance down to the cent. If your backtest ran on a zero-commission server, it adds your target round-turn commission per lot to every trade and recalculates the true balance and drawdown curves.
- News Windows and Execution Warnings: Uses MT5 Economic Calendar history to flag trades opened or closed during restricted high-impact news minutes, same-minute TP/SL ambiguity bars, consecutive order stacking, and short scalps that turn unprofitable after real commission costs.
- Source Code (.mq5) Check: Optionally scans your .mq5 source file to point out unclosed bar reads (look-ahead bias) and missing array series indexing lines.
Inputs
- File Selection: File names for the HTML backtest report and optional .mq5 source file (if left empty, the tool automatically picks the newest files in MQL5\Files).
- Rule Templates and Limits: 5 built-in evaluation templates (2-Step Standard, 2-Step Equity Base, 1-Step Strict Static, 1-Step Intraday Trailing, 1-Step EOD Trailing) plus a Custom mode where you can set your own daily/max loss percentages and midnight reset rules.
- Cost and News Filters: Target round-turn commission per lot ($), restricted high-impact news window (+/- minutes), and real-tick backtest toggle.
- Timezone, Symbol and Panel Settings: Automatic or manual broker timezone selection, custom symbol name mapping (e.g., GOLD=XAUUSD), and on-chart panel X/Y position.
Important Notes and Technical Boundaries
- Market Watch and M1 History: This utility does not place trades; it is an offline analysis tool for backtest reports. Make sure the symbols traded in your report are enabled in the MT5 Market Watch window and that your broker server provides M1 (1-minute) bar history covering your backtest dates.
- Abnormal Spread Widening and Slippage: Standard MT5 M1 bar history stores Bid prices only. Sudden Ask-side spread widening during midnight rollover (00:00), high-impact news releases, or low-liquidity periods, as well as live execution slippage, are not recorded in M1 bar data beyond what is reflected in your backtest deal prices.
- Sub-Minute Resolution and Swap Recording: The replay engine runs on 1-minute (M1) bars; potential sub-minute excursions on trades lasting less than 60 seconds are highlighted in the execution warnings table. Following standard MT5 HTML report structure, swap amounts are applied from the closing deal row.
- Single-File (.mq5) Scan Scope: The optional code scanner inspects the selected .mq5 file directly; it reports the count of external .mqh include files without scanning external header files separately.
