Asian Session Anchor Profile

Asian Session Anchor Profile

Operational Guide for Traders

1. Overview

The Asian Session Anchor Profile derives a structured set of reference levels from the Asian trading session and projects them into the subsequent London and New York sessions. These levels are designed to be used in three ways:
  1. As support and resistance zones defining where price is most likely to be contested.
  2. As breakout zones, where a decisive break and acceptance signals range expansion.
  3. As statistical extension bands, identifying when price has moved beyond its normal dispersion.
The indicator does not generate signals. It defines the price framework within which trading decisions are taken.

2. Chart Components

Asian Session Range (Shaded Box) The highest and lowest prices recorded during the Asian session. The box boundaries represent the initial balance of the day and serve as the primary intraday support and resistance zones, as well as the most frequently tested breakout triggers.
Volume Profile Levels Derived from the distribution of trading activity within the Asian session:
  • POC (Point of Control): The price level with the highest traded activity. It represents the session's balance point.
  • VAH (Value Area High): The upper boundary of the zone containing the majority of session activity. It functions as resistance.
  • VAL (Value Area Low): The lower boundary of that zone. It functions as support.
Anchored VWAP and Standard Deviation Bands
  • Asian VWAP: The volume-weighted average price anchored at the start of the Asian session.
  • Daily VWAP: The volume-weighted average price anchored at the start of the trading day.
  • Standard Deviation Bands (1st to 3rd): Statistical extension zones measured from each VWAP, defining the normal range of price dispersion.

3. Levels as Support, Resistance, and Breakout Zones

The core application of this tool is the treatment of each level as a zone, not as an exact price.
VAH and VAL as Support/Resistance and Breakout Zones
  • While the market is balanced, VAH acts as resistance and VAL acts as support. Rotation between these boundaries defines range-bound conditions.
  • A decisive break and sustained acceptance beyond VAH or VAL signals range expansion. Once broken, the level typically inverts its role: a broken VAH becomes support on retest; a broken VAL becomes resistance on retest.
  • A break that fails to hold and closes back inside the value area is a high-quality reversal condition, with the POC as the first objective and the opposite boundary as the secondary objective.
Asian High and Low as Breakout Zones
  • The box boundaries are the reference points for the first breakout attempts of the day. A clean break with continuation supports a trending-day interpretation. A break that is rapidly reclaimed signals a failed breakout and rotation back into the range.
POC as the Balance Point
  • The POC acts as intraday support during pullbacks in an upward structure, as resistance during rallies in a downward structure, and as the mean-reversion objective when price is displaced away from value.
VWAP as Dynamic Support/Resistance
  • When price is sustained above a VWAP, that VWAP functions as dynamic support; when price is sustained below it, it functions as dynamic resistance. Pullbacks into the VWAP within an established directional move provide structured entry references.
Standard Deviation Bands as Extension Zones
  • The 1st band represents normal dispersion. The 2nd and 3rd bands represent statistical extremes. Price reaching the outer bands is extended: breakout attempts at these zones frequently fail, while sustained acceptance beyond them confirms strong directional participation.

4. Operational Applications

Application 1: Range Rotation Within the Value Area
  • Condition: Price opens and remains between VAH and VAL, with no decisive breakout.
  • Execution: Long positions on rejection at VAL, targeting the POC then VAH. Short positions on rejection at VAH, targeting the POC then VAL.
  • Invalidation: A decisive close beyond the boundary being traded.
Application 2: Breakout, Acceptance, and Retest
  • Condition: Price closes beyond VAH, VAL, or the Asian high/low and sustains beyond that level.
  • Execution: Enter on the first successful retest of the broken level, now acting as support (above) or resistance (below), in the direction of the breakout.
  • Objective: The outer standard deviation bands.
  • Invalidation: A close back inside the broken zone.
Application 3: Failed Breakout Reversal
  • Condition: Price breaks a range or value area boundary but fails to hold, closing back inside the range.
  • Execution: Position in the direction of the reclaim.
  • Objective: The VWAP, then the POC, then the opposite boundary.
  • Invalidation: A new close beyond the original breakout extreme.
Application 4: VWAP Pullback in a Trending Session
  • Condition: A sustained directional move with price holding on one side of the VWAP.
  • Execution: Participate with the prevailing direction on pullbacks into the VWAP zone.
  • Invalidation: A decisive close on the opposite side of the VWAP.

5. Execution and Risk Considerations

  • Treat every level as a zone with tolerance, not as a precise price line.
  • Prefer candle-close confirmation over intra-bar touches when evaluating breaks and reclaims.
  • Reduce exposure around scheduled high-impact releases; such events routinely violate technical zones.
  • Define invalidation before entry and place stops beyond the zone, not at the zone.
  • The framework defines where the market is likely to react; position sizing and timing remain the trader's responsibility.

6. Summary

The Asian Session Anchor Profile provides a daily price framework: the Asian range and the value area boundaries (VAH/VAL) define support, resistance, and breakout zones; the POC defines the balance point; the anchored VWAPs provide dynamic support and resistance; and the standard deviation bands define statistical extension. Applied with discipline, these levels allow the trader to classify the market as balanced or expanding, and to act at the points where reaction probability is highest.
