Fundamental Market Analysis for August 19, 2026 (EURUSD, GBPUSD, USDJPY)
Event to watch today:
09:00 EET. GBP – Consumer Price Index
21:00 EET. USD – Release of Fed meeting minutes
EURUSD:

The Eurozone economy continues to provide a moderately supportive backdrop for the euro. July inflation remains above the ECB’s target, while the market is pricing in the possibility of another rate increase in September. Today, investors are awaiting the final Eurozone inflation figures, so the euro’s potential will depend on whether the data confirm persistent price pressures and current expectations for ECB policy.
The main driver of the current session is US dollar weakness. The US currency remains near multi-month lows as US Treasury yields have eased from recent peaks, while weaker employment data and more moderate inflation have reduced expectations of an imminent Federal Reserve rate increase. The release of the minutes from the latest Federal Reserve meeting later today could increase volatility, but until then, support for the dollar appears limited.
For EURUSD, this combination of factors maintains a moderately bullish bias. The euro is supported by expectations of tighter ECB policy, while the dollar lacks a new strong domestic catalyst. The main risks are more restrictive signals in the Federal Reserve minutes or an unexpected decline in Eurozone inflation. However, under the current market backdrop, the buying scenario remains the base case.
Trading idea: BUY 1.1585, SL 1.1555, TP 1.1645
GBPUSD:

The pound approaches the release of July inflation data following weaker UK labor market figures. Unemployment remained elevated, vacancies declined, and private-sector wage growth slowed. These signals limit expectations of further Bank of England tightening, leaving the British currency with less robust domestic support than the euro.
At the same time, the broader US dollar backdrop remains more important than the UK’s local weakness. Lower US Treasury yields and reduced expectations of an imminent Federal Reserve rate increase are keeping the US currency near multi-month lows. For GBPUSD, this creates room for further gains, although the reaction to UK inflation could be sharp: stronger data would support the pound, while a weak report could temporarily shift the balance.
The base case nevertheless remains in favor of further GBPUSD gains. The UK labor market is cooling, but this factor has already received considerable market attention following yesterday’s release, while the broader US dollar impulse remains weak. Ahead of the Federal Reserve minutes, and provided UK inflation does not disappoint significantly, the buying scenario for the pound against the dollar remains preferable.
Trading idea: BUY 1.3540, SL 1.3505, TP 1.3610
USDJPY:

The yen is receiving more sustainable fundamental support from Japan’s government bond market. The yield on 10-year Japanese government bonds has approached 3%, while market participants have strengthened expectations of another Bank of Japan rate increase. This shift is gradually reducing the appeal of interest-rate differential trades and making further yen weakness less one-sided.
At the same time, the US side of the pair is losing some of its previous advantage. US Treasury yields have declined from recent highs, while weaker employment data and more moderate inflation have led the market to scale back expectations of a Federal Reserve rate increase. This reduces support for the dollar specifically against the yen, which is particularly sensitive to changes in the relative yield dynamics of the two countries.
For USDJPY, the base case points to further downside. The risk of renewed action by Japanese authorities remains an additional constraint on the pair’s upside following the recent coordinated intervention, but it is not the main argument. The key factor is the shift in interest rate and yield expectations. If the Federal Reserve minutes fail to restore demand for the dollar and expectations for the Bank of Japan remain intact, the balance may gradually shift further in favor of the yen.
