Andrew Lawrence, an economist at Dresdner Kleinwort Benson, created the so-called skyscraper index that shows correlation between the construction of the world’s highest buildings and economic crisis. Thus, in the US, the Panic of 1907 occurred just after the erection of the Metropolitan Life Tower(213 meters high) and the Singer Building (187 meters high) was started. The construction of the Chrysler Building (320 meters high) and the Empire State Building (443 meters high) preceded the Great Depression. The 1973 oil crisis followed the start of construction works on the World Trade Center (the Twin Towers, 417 and 415 meters high).
