Low Noise Price Channel

This is a significantly improved version of the classic Price Channel indicator, enhanced with special filters that substantially reduce the number of false signals during sideways price movement and allow positions to be held until the end of the trend. Unlike many indicators on the market, Low Noise Price Channel is not a “black box”; the algorithm of its operation is described in detail below, and any programmer can attempt to implement it independently. Fig.1 shows an example of the indicator working on the 15-minute EURUSD chart.

How Low Noise Price Channel Works?

Two modes of price channel construction

Unlike the standard price channel, the indicator allows you to choose the method for calculating the channel boundaries:

High/Low-Based Channel — the classical approach to building the channel based on bar highs and lows,
Close-Based Channel — a unique approach to building the channel based on bar closing prices, which forms a smoother channel and helps reduce the influence of short-term intraday price spikes.

To build the price channel, it is also necessary to specify its period — InpPeriod (valid range: greater than 2), over which the bars are analyzed.

Minimum price channel width filter

This is another unique additional parameter MinWidthPC (valid range from 0 to 99%), which prevents excessive channel narrowing during periods of low volatility. If the price movement becomes too small, the channel width remains at the specified minimum level (as a percentage of the price), and the channel boundaries do not change until the price breaks the channel upward or downward.

This approach allows you to:

• stabilize the behavior of the channel,
• significantly reduce the number of false reversal signals during flat markets,
• focus on truly significant market movements.

The value of the MinWidthPC parameter directly determines how large trends you are willing to hold (Fig.2–Fig.3).

Confirmation of price channel breakout

This is another unique additional parameter ConfirmPC (valid range from 0 to InpPeriod), which requires confirmation of the channel breakout.

For example, in High/Low-Based mode, if ConfirmPC = 4, the channel breakout will be considered confirmed and the upper boundary will move upward only when four consecutive bars have highs that exceed the upper boundary of the channel.

This approach significantly reduces the number of false channel reversal signals.

Visual representation of market conditions

The indicator draws on the price chart:

• the upper boundary of the channel,
• the lower boundary of the channel,
• the middle line of the channel.

The color of the middle line (the center of the channel) shows the current market condition:

Blue — upward trend (BUY)
Red — downward trend (SELL)
Gray — consolidation / sideways market, no clearly defined trend (FLAT)

This allows a quick assessment of the market condition even during active trading. With a proper choice of indicator parameters, the channel boundaries act as horizontal Support/Resistance levels.

The indicator does not repaint on closed bars, which makes it suitable for both manual trading and systematic strategies.

Trading signals

The indicator generates clear signals for entering and exiting positions.

Buy signal: the color of the middle of the channel changes from gray to blue. This means the market transitions from flat to an upward trend, and the trader may look for a buy trade.

Sell signal: the color of the middle of the channel changes from gray to red. This means the market transitions from flat to a downward trend, and the trader may look for a sell trade.

If the parameter ConfirmPC = 0, during sharp price fluctuations direct transitions blue–red (sell signal) or red–blue (buy signal) are possible without a gray section.

Trend weakening signal: the color of the middle of the channel changes from red/blue to gray.

When the middle line becomes gray, it means the price may be entering a consolidation phase, and further movement may be either continuation or reversal. Therefore, this signal can be used for:

  • full or partial position closing,

  • tightening the stop-loss.

Indicator notifications

The indicator supports several types of notifications:

• popup notifications — enabled by the AlertON parameter,
• push notifications to a smartphone — enabled by PushON,
• email notifications — enabled by EmailON,
• logging signals to the terminal journal — enabled by Print_online_to_Logfile.

A notification is sent only once when the trend changes, that is, when the color of the middle of the price channel changes.

Notifications are generated only after the bar closes, that is, after the first tick of the new bar arrives.

Messages about errors in indicator parameter input or problems with quotes are displayed in the “Experts” tab (Fig. 4).

Low Noise Moving Average (LowNoiseMA) Traders who use moving averages (MAs) in their trading are well aware that in consolidation/flat zones, this tool often generates numerous false reversal signals with minor price changes. These fluctuations are essentially market noise. The LowNoiseMA indicator implements two approaches that effectively reduce the number of such false reversals, allowing for a clear and simple adjustment of the MA to any specific trading instrument and timeframe.
