Turn raw ATR into a clear 0-100 volatility reading — is the market quiet or stretched? See it at a glance. No repaint.
Any pair, any timeframe. Free trial in the Strategy Tester.
▬▬▬ THE PROBLEM ▬▬▬
Raw ATR gives you a number — say 0.0040 — but that number means nothing on its own. Is 40 pips high for this pair right now, or perfectly normal? You can't tell without scrolling back
through weeks of history in your head. So most traders either ignore volatility timing entirely, or size every trade the same way whether the market is dead calm or about to explode.
That is how you get stopped out in a storm, or bored to sleep in a range.
▬▬▬ WHAT IT DOES ▬▬▬
Volatility ATR Percentile ranks the current ATR against its own recent history and plots the result on a fixed 0 to 100 scale. A reading of 90 means volatility is higher than 90 percent of the recent lookback window. A reading of 10 means it is unusually compressed.
Between a low and a high threshold sits a green tradable band — the zone where volatility is active but not extreme. Below the low threshold and above the high threshold the histogram turns red, so overheated and dead-calm conditions are obvious at a single glance.
▬▬▬ HOW IT WORKS ▬▬▬
The indicator measures ATR on each bar, then computes where that value falls within its recent range as a percentile from 0 to 100. Because the scale is bounded, the same thresholds work on EURUSD, Gold, an index or a crypto pair — no manual tuning per instrument.
Three display modes let you read it the way you prefer: histogram only, line only, or both together. An optional higher-timeframe mode ranks volatility on a bigger timeframe while you trade the lower one, so your bias and your entries stay in sync.
▬▬▬ KEY FEATURES ▬▬▬
- Volatility as a bounded 0 to 100 percentile, not an open-ended ATR number
- Green tradable band between a low and a high threshold; red outside
- Three view modes: histogram, line, or both
- Multi-timeframe mode for higher-timeframe volatility bias
- Popup, sound and push alerts on entry into the tradable band
- Works on any symbol and any timeframe, no per-market tuning
- No repaint — signals are final on bar close
▬▬▬ INPUTS ▬▬▬
ATR Period — lookback for the ATR itself. Default 14.
Lookback — bars used to rank the current ATR. Default 100.
Display Mode — Histogram, Line, or Both. Default Both.
Low Threshold — lower edge of the green band. Default 30.
High Threshold — upper edge of the green band. Default 90.
Higher Timeframe — timeframe for the MTF bias. Default current.
Alerts — popup, sound, push (no email).
▬▬▬ HOW TO USE IT ▬▬▬
- Attach it to any chart. The default 14 / 100 settings work everywhere.
- Read the zone: green means active, tradable volatility; red below means the market is asleep; red above means it is overextended.
- Use it as a filter — take your system's signals when the reading sits in the green band, stand aside when it is red at the bottom.
- Size with it — smaller positions when the percentile is high, normal size when it is moderate.
- Optional: set a higher timeframe to align your volatility bias with the bigger picture, and turn on alerts for band entries.
