At the very least take down browser add-ons, and clean out cache and cookies, preferably scouring the machine for spyware and worms. And finish by cleaning the registry.

It depends on what to consider as a contagion, the site is advertising subscription - when you click on a link, it gets the address of the site from which proceeded, and puts his cookie, and you get the effect. Spy is good, and just a simple text file (cookies (cookies)), and such tricks webmasters just sea :)
