Overview
The FNCD is a momentum oscillator that combines statistical normalization with the Fisher Transform to create a highly responsive yet smooth indicator. It measures how far price has deviated from its mean in terms of standard deviations, then applies the Fisher Transform to normalize the distribution. The result is a bounded oscillator with clear crossover signals, displayed as a two-color histogram against a signal line.
How It Works
Calculation Process:
-
Normalization: For each bar, the indicator calculates how many standard deviations the closing price is from its moving average over a specified period (FN parameter)
-
Deviation Scaling: The normalized value is divided by the Deviation parameter to adjust sensitivity
-
Fisher Transform: The scaled value is capped at ±0.99 and transformed using the Fisher formula: 0.5 * ln((1+X)/(1-X))
-
Signal Generation: A fast EMA is compared to a slow EMA of the Fisher values to generate the histogram signals
Visual Components:
-
Green Histogram: Indicates bullish momentum (fast EMA above slow EMA)
-
Red Histogram: Indicates bearish momentum (fast EMA below slow EMA)
-
Silver Dotted Line: Slow signal line (serves as the zero/trigger line)
Parameters
| Parameter | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| FN | 130 | Period for calculating the mean and standard deviation. Longer periods provide broader context |
| Deviation | 3.0 | Sensitivity multiplier. Lower values increase responsiveness; higher values reduce noise |
| FastEMA | 16 | Fast EMA period applied to Fisher values for signal generation |
| SlowEMA | 90 | Slow EMA period that acts as the trigger/signal line |
How to Interpret
Signal Crossovers:
-
Bullish Signal: Green histogram appears (fast EMA crosses above slow EMA)
-
Bearish Signal: Red histogram appears (fast EMA crosses below slow EMA)
-
Signal Strength: Taller histogram bars indicate stronger momentum
Key Characteristics:
-
Center Line: The silver dotted line serves as the equilibrium point
-
Histogram Height: Reflects the strength of the current trend
-
Transitions: Color changes indicate momentum shifts
Trading Applications
Entry Signals:
-
Long Entry: When histogram turns green (fast crosses above slow)
-
Short Entry: When histogram turns red (fast crosses below slow)
-
Confirmation: Look for growing histogram bars for trend strength confirmation
Exit Signals:
-
Long Exit: Green histogram starts shrinking or turns red
-
Short Exit: Red histogram starts shrinking or turns green
Divergence Analysis:
-
Bullish Divergence: Price makes lower low while histogram makes higher low
-
Bearish Divergence: Price makes higher high while histogram makes lower high
Best Practices
-
Combine with Trend Analysis: Use on higher timeframes to confirm overall trend direction
-
Multiple Timeframe Confirmation: Align signals across multiple timeframes for higher probability setups
-
Avoid Choppy Markets: The indicator works best in trending conditions; sideways markets may produce false signals
-
Parameter Optimization: Adjust FN and Deviation based on your trading timeframe and instrument volatility
Advantages
-
Non-repainting (values are final once bars close)
-
Smooth output due to Fisher Transform normalization
-
Clear visual representation with intuitive color coding
-
Combines statistical and smoothing techniques for robust signals
Limitations
-
Like all indicators, subject to lag during rapid price changes
-
May generate false signals in ranging/choppy markets
-
Requires parameter optimization for different instruments and timeframes
Timeframe Suitability
-
Works on all timeframes (M1 to Monthly)
-
Shorter FN periods recommended for lower timeframes
-
Longer FN periods recommended for higher timeframes and swing trading
