I remember checking my phone first thing in the morning, still half asleep. I opened the charts… and saw a move I “missed.” Big move. Clean. Exactly the kind I’ve been waiting for. Without even thinking properly, I jumped in late. No plan, no setup — just the feeling of “I can still catch something.”
Within minutes, the market pulled back. Of course it did. It wasn’t a setup anymore — it was the end of the move. I closed with a loss, frustrated before my day even started. That’s when it hit me… I didn’t lose because of the market, I lost because I started the day reacting instead of thinking.

How do institutions use stop hunts to manipulate retail traders into providing liquidity, and how can you identify the signs of a stop hunt before it occurs?
Most traders believe the market simply moves based on supply and demand, but what they fail to see is that liquidity is the real driver behind every move. Institutions don’t randomly enter trades; they need large amounts of orders to fill their positions, and those orders come from retail traders. The easiest way to access that liquidity is through stop losses, because they are clustered in predictable areas such as below support or above resistance. Before a major move, price is often guided toward these zones in a controlled way, creating the illusion of a breakout or a continuation. Retail traders react emotionally, placing trades and stacking stop losses in obvious locations, unknowingly creating a pool of liquidity that institutions are waiting to exploit.
The moment price reaches that pool, the stop hunt occurs, triggering a cascade of stop losses that fuels a sharp move in the opposite direction. I remember one trade where I was completely sure I was right. Everything matched — analysis, bias, timing. I entered with full confidence. Price went a bit against me… nothing serious, still within my stop. But I didn’t like it. It didn’t feel right anymore. So I closed it early.

I remember catching a perfect entry… and still managing to lose money on it. Price moved exactly how I expected, clean and smooth. I was in profit quickly. But instead of following my plan, I started managing it too much. Moving stop loss too early, adjusting things, watching every candle like it mattered.
