VBS (Volatility Breakout System) is an Expert Advisor for MetaTrader 5 that trades one of the most studied behaviors of directional trading: the breakout that emerges after a period of volatility compression.
Its logic is straightforward. It does not trade just any price movement. It waits for the market to build energy within a quality range and acts only when that energy is released in a breakout with real intent to continue, relying on a widely documented principle: expansion follows contraction.
It is designed for instruments with clear volatility episodes and good directional continuity, such as NASDAQ100, and it is adaptable to other markets.
QUALITY RANGES, NOT JUST ANY CONSOLIDATION
Not every consolidation is worth trading. Before considering a breakout, VBS measures the recent accumulation range and compares it with current volatility, accepting only structures that fall within a target band: neither so narrow that they are noise with no follow-through, nor so wide that the breakout arrives exhausted. It also discards ranges distorted by a single sharp move, requiring genuine accumulation rather than the reflection of one anomalous candle.
CONFIRMED BREAKOUTS
The main enemy of any breakout strategy is the fakeout. VBS includes several confirmation layers that work together to separate a true breakout from a false one:
- It requires price to clear the range boundary by a margin proportional to volatility.
- It validates the strength of the close relative to the breakout point, avoiding wicks that pierce and pull back.
- It requires a minimum impulse size to discard weak breakouts.
- It can require volume confirmation and a context of expanding volatility into the move.
Only when the breakout passes these filters is an entry enabled.
TREND CONFIRMATION ACROSS TIMEFRAMES
VBS can align each breakout with the underlying structure. It evaluates the dominant direction on the working timeframe and, optionally, requires agreement from a higher timeframe, so it trades only breakouts that push in favor of the broader context and not against it.
RISK MANAGEMENT
VBS includes a set of money-management tools to suit different trader profiles:
- - Volatility-based Stop Loss (ATR) or structural Stop Loss using fractals.
- - Position sizing by fixed lot or by risk percentage (on balance or on a fixed base capital).
- - Per-trade risk limit, which blocks any entry whose real risk exceeds your tolerance.
- - Automatic Break-Even.
- - Progressive Trailing Stop, configurable in several tiers that tighten as profit grows.
- - Gap protection.
- - Trading session filter.
- - Automatic daily close and close before the weekend.
By default it trades a single position at a time, with a waiting period between entries. This is a conservative approach, designed to keep risk contained and avoid the accumulation of exposure.
EXIT ADAPTED TO THE MOVE
A solid breakout can turn into a wide extension. That is why the exit management combines early capital protection with a progressive follow that adjusts as the move develops, aiming to let genuinely developing breakouts run without giving up on securing profit along the way.
ADAPTATION TO VOLATILITY
The whole mechanism —range width, breakout margin, Stop Loss distances, Break-Even activation, Trailing and filters— is calculated on current volatility using ATR. Behavior stays consistent whether the market speeds up or calms down, and this makes it easier to adapt to instruments of different character without changing the system's logic.
TRANSPARENCY
All entry decisions are calculated exclusively on closed candles. This means the Expert Advisor does not repaint signals and does not use look-ahead bias. Since it works only with closed candles, the signals in testing and in live trading start from the same basis.

A FAMILY OF THREE STRATEGIES
VBS is part of a family of three Expert Advisors that exploit different market behaviors and can be combined:
- VBS (Volatility Breakout System): trades the expansion that follows a phase of volatility compression.

- TPS (Trend Pullback System): waits for a quality pullback within a trend and enters on the resumption.

- ORB (Opening Range Breakout): takes advantage of the breakout of the session's opening range.

Each strategy works independently and is offered separately. When traded together they tend to complement each other, since when the context does not favor one it often favors another.
