This is the user guide for Aurum Range Breakout and its free edition Aurum Asian Range Breakout, two Expert Advisors for gold (XAUUSD) on MetaTrader 5. The three set files mentioned below are attached at the end of this post.

1. How the strategy works

  • From 00:00 to 05:00 GMT the EA records the high and the low of the Asian session.
  • At 05:00 GMT it places a Buy Stop just above the range and a Sell Stop just below it (5% of the range width away).
  • The first order filled is the trade of the day. The other order is cancelled immediately (OCO).
  • Stop Loss: on the other side of the range. Take Profit: 1R (the same distance as the Stop Loss).
  • Unfilled orders are cancelled at 15:00 GMT. An open trade is closed at 16:00 GMT. Nothing is held overnight, so there is no swap.
  • Days with a range that is too narrow (below 0.10 x daily ATR) or too wide (above 0.80 x daily ATR) are skipped.

2. Installation

  1. Buy or download the EA from the Market inside MetaTrader 5 (Navigator - Market - Purchased).
  2. Open one XAUUSD chart (any suffix: XAUUSD, XAUUSDm, GOLD...). Any timeframe works; M15 is convenient. One chart is enough.
  3. Drag the EA onto the chart, enable "Algo Trading", and press OK. The panel and today's range box appear on the chart.
  4. To use a preset: in the EA settings press "Load" and choose one of the set files below.

3. Settings (set files)

  • AurumRange_Default.set (full version): 0.5% risk per trade, daily loss limit 3%. Backtest Jul 2021 - Sep 2026 on 10,000 USD: +45%, profit factor 1.19, 1,250 trades, win rate 53.7%, max drawdown 9.47%.
  • AurumRange_PropFirm.set (full version): 0.25% risk per trade, daily loss limit 2%, stop new trades at 8% drawdown, minimum-lot risk cap 1%. Backtest on 100,000 USD: +24.7%, max drawdown 5.07%. Because there is only one trade per day, the daily loss stays small. Set the limits a little inside your firm's rules.
  • AurumAsian_Free_Default.set (free version): fixed lot 0.01, daily loss limit 3%. Backtest: 1,250 trades, profit factor 1.45 with the fixed 0.01 lot.

Recommended deposit: 2,000 USD or more. On smaller accounts the broker's 0.01 minimum lot risks more than 0.5% on many days; the EA skips any trade where it would risk more than 5% of equity (adjustable).

4. Time zone (important)

All session hours are in GMT. On a live account the EA reads your broker's server offset automatically. In the Strategy Tester the clock is simulated, so the EA detects the broker type from the weekly market open: brokers that open the week on Sunday are treated as GMT+0, the others as GMT+2/GMT+3 (New York close). If your broker uses another time zone, set "Broker server time zone" to Fixed and enter the offset. The panel shows the current GMT time and the offset it uses.

5. How to test it yourself

  • Strategy Tester - Expert: Aurum Range Breakout - Symbol: XAUUSD - Model: "1 minute OHLC" or "Every tick based on real ticks" - Period: as long as your broker's history allows.
  • Use your own broker's data: spreads and session times differ between brokers.
  • Expect losing streaks. The longest in our test was 7 trades. 2022 and 2023 were almost flat; 2024-2026 were better. Past results do not guarantee future results.

6. Gold only

We tested the same rules on EURUSD, GBPUSD, USDJPY and BTCUSD. They did not work there (profit factor 0.84 to 1.05), so the EA is recommended for XAUUSD only.

7. FAQ

Can I run it together with Aurum Trend Breakout? Yes. They use different magic numbers and different trading styles (intraday range vs. multi-day trend). Keep the total risk in mind.

Netting account? Supported. On netting accounts the EA does not open a trade if the symbol already has a position from something else.

No trade today? Check the panel status: the range may have been too narrow or too wide, the spread too high, or the day already used.
