A Profit Factor of 3.0 Over 28 Trades Proves Nothing: How to Read Trade Count Before Anything Else

The first number to read in any backtest report is not the profit factor, the win rate or the drawdown. It is the trade count, because it decides how much the other numbers are allowed to mean.

Few trades means the result belongs to a handful of days
With 28 trades over eight years, roughly three trades a year carried the entire outcome. Remove the two best and the profit factor may fall below 1.0. That is not a strategy being evaluated; that is a small number of lucky days being described.

Optimisation gets easier as the sample shrinks
Any strategy with enough parameters can be tuned until a short trade list looks excellent. The fewer trades there are, the less tuning it takes and the less the fit means. A system with 500 trades that survives a parameter change is telling you something. A system with 30 is not.

A useful rough guide
Below about 100 trades, treat the headline figures as anecdotes. Between 100 and 300, treat them as weak evidence. Above 500, the numbers start to carry weight — provided they come from real tick data and cover more than one market regime.

Low frequency is not automatically bad
Some strategies genuinely trade rarely: daily-timeframe breakout systems, volatility-compression systems. That is a legitimate design. The mistake is not the low frequency itself, it is presenting a profit factor from 28 trades as if it were as solid as one from 500.

How we handle it
Bitcoin Glacier Daily Trend measured a profit factor of 2.40 on BTCUSD D1 at its Ultra tier — with only 28 trades in eight years. We print that trade count in the product description, immediately after the profit factor, because a buyer who reads 2.40 without reading 28 has been misled by omission. Bitcoin Comet, by contrast, produced 128 trades in the same period with a profit factor of 2.37 and 8.3% maximum equity drawdown at its Standard tier, which is a far more testable claim.
