Why Oil?
Oil is a very difficult asset to create (automated) trading strategies on. It lacks the continuous upward momentum of indices/gold and the mean reverting nature of FX strategies. On top of that, Oil can respond with enormous volatility to global news events. We at XYZ Capital found a way to create a robust daily breakout strategy on oil. It captures upward momentum in weeks when oil is trending.

How to backtest this EA
- Choose the correct WTI Crude Oil symbol of your chosen broker (e.g. XTIUSD on Darwinex/IC).
- Choose Real Ticks.
- Deposit should be 1k or higher.
- Backtest from 2018-now (on IC the 100% real ticks backtest matches the 1mOHLC very closely (for 2025-2026). So a longer term backtest may be quite reliable on 1mOHLC)
- Check the recovery factor along with sharp ratio. RF is a critical metric to evaluate the stability of strategies. On most brokers it will sit around 7 for OilVectorX which is quite solid. However the RF on Darwinex will be much higher.
Development methodology
OilVectorX is developed and validated using Darwinex 100% real tick data, split cleanly between development and validation periods:
- In-sample (development/optimization): 2020 - 2024
- Out-of-sample (unseen validation): 2018 - 2020 and 2024 - July 2026
- It has been running live with amazing performance so far on multiple brokers!
Keeping the out-of-sample periods on both sides of the in-sample window - rather than only after it - checks that the engine's logic holds up on price behavior it was never tuned against, in both directions of time.

Prop firm mode
- Max Daily Loss % - halts new trades for the day once breached

Setup
Attach to your broker's WTI Crude Oil chart (XTIUSD, USOUSD, WTI, or similar). Select your risk metric and go!
Timeframe of the chart doesn't affect strategy timing - the engine includes a timer-driven fallback so it keeps working even without live ticks.
Recommended: run on a VPS for uninterrupted operation, and test on a demo account before going live.
Keep in mind
- Minimum account balance depends on your chosen lot-sizing mode and risk %; conservative sizing is recommended for accounts under $1,000.
- Broker spread and swap conditions on WTI Crude Oil vary - results will differ across brokers.
- This is not a "zero drawdown" system. Like any breakout strategy, it will have losing streaks between winning ones - backtest, test on demo and plan your risk accordingly.
