How To Run A Demo Test That Actually Tells You Something
A Step By Step Guide To Testing Nova GOLD Breakout In The Strategy Tester, And What To Look For While It Runs.
Plenty of people download a demo, press start, glance at a profit number, and walk away having learned almost nothing. A strategy test is only as useful as the questions you bring to it. This guide walks through setting it up properly and, more importantly, what to pay attention to once it's running. It works for any EA, so even if you never touch this one, the method is worth keeping.
Step One: Get The Demo And Open The Tester
Download the free demo from the Nova GOLD Breakout page on the MQL5 Market, which installs it into your MetaTrader 5 terminal. Then open the Strategy Tester from the View menu, or press Ctrl+R. Choose the Expert Advisor mode and select Nova GOLD Breakout from the list.
Step Two: Set It Up For Gold
Pick your broker's gold symbol. For most brokers that's XAUUSD, though some add a suffix, so use whichever name your broker uses. Set the timeframe to M1, since that's what the EA is built around. Choose a date range long enough to include quiet periods, busy ones, and a few news-heavy weeks, not just one flattering month. For modeling, "Every tick based on real ticks" is the most realistic option if your broker provides the history, and it's worth the extra wait for the data to download.
Step Three: Turn On Visual Mode First
Before running a long test, tick the visual mode box and watch a short stretch play out. This is where the logic becomes real. You'll see the session range form, the first trade fire when price breaks it, a second entry when price pulls back to the level, or a fallback trade when a breakout fails and price reverses through the other side. A few sessions of watching teaches you more about how it behaves than the final report will.
What To Look For Once It Finishes
Ignore the headline profit number at first. Instead, check these in order. Look at the largest losing trade and the maximum drawdown, because those tell you what a bad stretch feels like. Look at the longest run of consecutive losses, because that's the sequence you'd actually have to sit through. Compare the average winning trade with the average losing trade, since a high win rate means nothing if the losses are far bigger than the wins. And look at how many trades happen per session, which for this EA is up to four, each with its own hard stop.
Then look at the shape of the equity curve over time. A healthy curve has dips. If one looks suspiciously smooth, ask why. Every test also deserves a reminder that a backtest is a simulation, with historical spreads and fills that won't match live conditions exactly, so treat it as evidence about the logic, never as a promise about the future.
One Note On News
The Strategy Tester has no live news feed, which is a problem for any EA with news protection. That's why version 1.1 includes a news generator for the tester, so the news filter's behavior can actually be tested instead of skipped over. If you want to see how the EA handles news windows, that's the feature to use.
Then Compare It To The Real Thing
After the test, open the two live signals and compare how a real account behaves with how the simulation did. Nova 007 is a funded $10,000 account trading real capital, and Nova 008 is the account in verification toward $100,000. If you like what you see, $199 stays until October 31st, then $330, and the PU Prime route is free with no deadline.
