Balance Drawdown vs Equity Drawdown: Why the Smaller Number Is the One Most Sellers Show You

Two numbers in a MetaTrader report carry the same word, drawdown, and they can differ by a factor of three on the same account. Knowing which one you are reading is the difference between an informed purchase and a surprise.

Balance drawdown only counts closed trades
Balance changes when a position closes. So balance drawdown measures the worst run of realised losses. A trade that is 40% under water but still open contributes nothing to it, because the balance line has not moved yet.

Equity drawdown counts what you actually lived through
Equity is balance plus the floating result of open positions. Equity drawdown therefore measures the deepest hole your account was actually in, at any moment, including trades that later recovered and closed in profit.

Why the gap matters most for the riskiest systems
For a strategy that closes trades quickly with a hard stop-loss, the two numbers are close. For a grid or martingale system that holds losers until they recover, balance drawdown can look modest while equity drawdown was catastrophic — and it is equity, not balance, that triggers a margin call. The system that shows 8% balance drawdown may have been 60% down on equity in the same week.

What to ask before you buy
Ask which of the two the seller quoted. If the answer is balance, the number tells you almost nothing about survival. Also ask for the trade count and the test window: a small drawdown over 30 trades in two years is not evidence of anything.

Our own practice
We publish maximum equity drawdown, always, even when it is unflattering. Gold Neuron EA ships with Ultra mode as the default, and Ultra measured 27.2% maximum equity drawdown with a profit factor of 1.49 over 533 trades from January 2022 to July 2026. Standard mode measured 18.5% on the same window. We would rather show you the larger honest number than the smaller convenient one.

All figures we publish are maximum equity drawdown, measured on real tick data. The full list is here: fxea365.com/ea/ranking
