What is Anchored VWAP?

VWAP (Volume Weighted Average Price) is one of the most respected reference levels used by institutional traders, hedge funds, and market makers. It represents the true "fair price" of an asset weighted by traded volume, making it far more meaningful than a simple moving average.

Anchored VWAP takes this concept further by resetting the calculation at specific time boundaries (daily open, weekly open, month start, etc.), giving traders a fresh reference level for each new trading period. Practical Trading Applications

Mean Reversion Setups When price extends to +2 or +3 standard deviation bands and shows exhaustion (rejection candle, bearish divergence), the probability of reversion to the VWAP mean is statistically elevated. Combine with RSI or Bollinger Bands for confirmation.

Trend Continuation Entries In strong trending markets, pullbacks to the VWAP line (or to the ±1 SD band) offer high-probability entries in the direction of the trend. This is the classic "VWAP bounce" trade used by professional day traders.

Institutional Order Flow Large orders from institutions are frequently executed near VWAP to minimize market impact. Watching how price interacts with VWAP tells you whether smart money is accumulating, distributing, or holding.

Break-and-Retest Setups When price breaks above or below VWAP with volume conviction, then returns to retest the level, this often marks the start of a new intraday trend. Anchored VWAP acts as dynamic support / resistance.

Session Bias Above daily VWAP = bulls in control for the session. Below daily VWAP = bears in control. It's that simple, and it works.

Using an anchor period on a timeframe too high will show only 1-2 bars of VWAP data. Match your timeframe to your anchor for best results.

Q: Does this work on Forex pairs? A: Yes. VWAP Pro auto-detects that your forex broker uses tick volume and switches automatically. No manual configuration needed.

Q: Can I use it on multiple charts simultaneously? A: Yes. Each chart runs an independent instance with its own settings.

Q: Does it repaint? A: No. VWAP values are calculated from historical bars using standard MQL5 buffers. Once a bar closes, its VWAP value is final.

Q: What is the difference between "Daily" VWAP and a moving average? A: A moving average weighs each bar equally regardless of volume. VWAP weighs bars by their actual traded volume, making it a much more accurate representation of the average price at which the market actually transacted.

Q: Can I read the VWAP value from an Expert Advisor? A: Yes. Use iCustom(_Symbol, _Period, "VWAP", ...) to access the buffer values from your EA.

Q: Which is better, real volume or tick volume? A: For futures, stocks, and CME-listed contracts, real volume is more accurate. For forex and CFDs, tick volume is your only option and it correlates strongly with real interbank volume. The Auto mode picks the right one.

Q: What are the standard deviation bands useful for? A: They act as dynamic support and resistance levels. Price touching +2 SD often indicates overbought conditions in the current period; +3 SD is a statistical extreme (roughly 0.3% of bars in a normal distribution).
