How do institutions use stop hunts to manipulate retail traders into providing liquidity, and how can you identify the signs of a stop hunt before it occurs?

Most traders believe the market simply moves based on supply and demand, but what they fail to see is that liquidity is the real driver behind every move. Institutions don’t randomly enter trades; they need large amounts of orders to fill their positions, and those orders come from retail traders. The easiest way to access that liquidity is through stop losses, because they are clustered in predictable areas such as below support or above resistance. Before a major move, price is often guided toward these zones in a controlled way, creating the illusion of a breakout or a continuation. Retail traders react emotionally, placing trades and stacking stop losses in obvious locations, unknowingly creating a pool of liquidity that institutions are waiting to exploit.

The moment price reaches that pool, the stop hunt occurs, triggering a cascade of stop losses that fuels a sharp move in the opposite direction. The key to recognizing this lies in the behavior just before the event: price becomes overly clean, levels look too obvious, and there is often a sudden spike or fake breakout that quickly fails. Instead of following the move, the more precise approach is to anticipate where liquidity is resting and wait for the manipulation to happen. When price sweeps those levels and immediately rejects, that is where the real move begins, allowing you to align with institutional intent rather than becoming part of the liquidity they use.

How do institutions use order flow absorption to trap traders during high-volume breakouts, and how can you recognize when aggressive buying or selling is actually being absorbed rather than continued?

At first glance, strong breakouts with high volume look like confirmation. Price pushes aggressively through a key level, candles expand, and volume spikes — everything suggests momentum and continuation. But what most traders fail to understand is that high volume does not necessarily mean strength; it simply means participation. Institutions operate differently from retail traders because they are not chasing price — they are positioning size. When price breaks a level with heavy volume, it often represents a moment where retail traders are entering aggressively, while institutions are quietly taking the opposite side of those trades. This creates a hidden dynamic called absorption, where one side of the market is being fully consumed without allowing price to move further in that direction.

The key to recognizing absorption is observing the mismatch between effort and result. If price shows strong volume and aggressive movement but fails to continue and instead stalls or reverses, it signals that the orders pushing price are being absorbed by larger opposing positions. This is especially clear when you see repeated attempts to push higher or lower, yet price remains contained or snaps back sharply. Instead of following the breakout, the more precise approach is to wait for that failure — the moment when aggressive buyers or sellers lose control. That failure reveals the true intention of the market, allowing you to position alongside institutional flow rather than against it, turning what appears to be strength into a high-probability reversal setup.
