I don't know what VPS is for, but Asus EEE PC 901 (with SSD disk) is almost silent and doesn't heat up. In idle mode (WinXP) with display switched off it consumes about 7 W (according to my measurements). Under load about 10-12 W. (True even a modem will "eat" electricity, but this is if access to the net is not through a network card). From APC RS-800 UPS works about 2 hours, and if you put 2 batteries at 12 V 9 ampere-hours each (consistently) + converter to 12 V, then all 15-20 hours. And there's also a native battery for 4-5 hours...
