USD/JPY holds near 158 as markets assess lower oil prices and developments in Europe
Market Summary
With few major U.S. economic releases scheduled at the start of the week, USD/JPY has been trading around 158.
The pair fell to around 157.70 in Tokyo before rebounding to 158.15. It also attracted buying on dips in Europe, reflecting support from the U.S.–Japan interest-rate differential.
A pause in the rise in oil prices, however, is limiting demand for the dollar. Tonight, oil, U.S. Treasury yields, and equity markets are likely to matter more than new economic data.
USD/JPY
The pair has found support on dips, but traders remain cautious about chasing it higher. Last week, USD/JPY failed to reach 159 even after a stronger-than-expected U.S. CPI report, keeping attention on resistance above.
The immediate focus is whether the pair can hold around 157.70 and break above today’s rebound high of 158.15. If buying continues after a breakout, USD/JPY could test the 158.50 area.
Conversely, a break below 157.70 would put a correction toward 157.50 in view. For now, the 157.50–158.50 range is a useful reference as markets watch for a breakout in either direction.
Oil and U.S. Yields
Oil prices have fallen on expectations that fuel supplies could increase after the United States temporarily suspended sanctions on Russia. U.S. equity-index futures are higher, while concerns about inflation and supply disruptions have eased somewhat.
Lower oil prices may curb dollar buying, while gains in equities may encourage yen selling. As a result, a decline in oil does not necessarily mean USD/JPY will fall by the same amount.
A decline in U.S. yields would weigh on USD/JPY, but the effect could be limited if equity gains prompt renewed yen selling.
The Euro and Yen Crosses
Selling pressure on the euro has returned amid escalating demonstrations in France. EUR/USD fell to 1.1187 and EUR/JPY to around 176.92 before both recovered.
For EUR/USD, the key question is whether it can hold above 1.12. Even if it rebounds, concerns about France may cap gains and leave the pair vulnerable to another test of the upper 1.11s.
Sterling will be in focus this week ahead of U.K. inflation data. Persistent inflation could support expectations of further rate hikes. Across yen crosses, however, it will also be important to see whether the equity recovery and yen selling continue.
What to Watch Tonight
The Federal Reserve is in its blackout period ahead of the FOMC meeting, so policymakers are refraining from discussing monetary policy. With few major U.S. data releases scheduled today, attention is likely to center on Treasury yields and equities.
If U.S. yields rise alongside stocks, USD/JPY may be more likely to test the upside. If yields and equities both fall, watch for renewed dollar selling and yen buying.
When the calendar is quiet, short-lived moves can reverse. After a break of a key level, check whether the market can hold beyond it.
Key Points for Overseas Markets
- Can USD/JPY hold around 157.70?
- Can it break above 158.15 and move toward 158.50?
- Will oil prices continue to fall, and will U.S. yields decline as well?
- Will gains in U.S. equities support yen selling?
- Could developments in France renew selling in the euro?
Today, support for USD/JPY is competing with a pause in dollar buying caused by lower oil prices. U.S. yields and equity-market reactions will be key to determining whether the pair can establish a direction around 158.
