The dollar remained under pressure today, while a recovery in equities also weighed on the yen, leaving USD/JPY trading around 158. This week’s U.S. CPI and PPI pointed to persistent inflation, but dollar gains did not continue. Fed Chair Warsh avoided a clear policy signal, and expectations of an imminent additional rate hike did not strengthen. Tonight, markets will focus on U.S. data, Treasury yields, and weekend position adjustments.

USD/JPY

The pair traded between 157.80 and 158.18. Dollar selling capped the upside, while yen selling supported the pair. The immediate focus is whether 157.80 holds; a break below would put 157.50 in view. On a rebound, watch for a break above today’s 158.18 high and a sustained move in the 158s. BOJ Governor Ueda noted upside risks to prices but did not clarify the timing of an early rate hike. Markets continue to assess policy in both Japan and the United States.

U.S. Data Tonight

• 9:30 p.m. JST: Import Price Index, forecast +0.6% month over month; previous +0.7%
• 9:30 p.m. JST: Export Price Index, forecast +1.0%; previous +0.6%
• 10:15 p.m. JST: Industrial Production, forecast +0.3%; previous 0.0%

If prices and production beat expectations and U.S. yields rise, the dollar could see renewed buying. Broadly weak data may extend dollar selling. The dollar failed to sustain gains after this week’s strong inflation data, so watch whether yields turn higher after the releases.

Euro and Yen Crosses

On dollar weakness, EUR/USD rose to around 1.1249, while yen selling helped EUR/JPY reach around 177.69. For EUR/USD, watch whether it breaks above 1.1250 and extends the rebound. If the dollar strengthens after the data, 1.12 is the key area to hold. Equity recovery is supporting yen crosses, but renewed U.S. stock weakness could bring yen buying back. Track each currency against the dollar and equity-market moves.

Oil and Weekend Positioning

Oil is at elevated levels in the low $97s. Persistent Middle East supply concerns could revive inflation worries and dollar demand. Traders may also reduce long-dollar positions ahead of the weekend, while geopolitical headlines can trigger sharp swings.

Key Points

• Can USD/JPY hold 157.80 and clear 158.18?
• Will Treasury yields turn higher after the data?
• Will equities continue to support yen selling?
• How will high oil prices and weekend position adjustments affect the dollar?

Dollar selling and yen selling are pulling in opposite directions. To assess USD/JPY, watch whether U.S. yields recover and the equity rebound continues.
