HIQDivergence marks regular MACD divergences on the price chart, following Alexander Elder's approach: price makes a new extreme while the MACD histogram does not confirm it.
How it works
- Histogram zones: the MACD histogram (12/26/9, main line minus signal line) is split into zones at each zero crossing. Inside each zone the indicator takes the most extreme bar that has already turned.
- Bullish divergence: two consecutive zones below zero, where price makes a lower low but the newer histogram trough is shallower.
- Bearish divergence: two consecutive zones above zero, where price makes a higher high but the newer histogram peak is lower.
- The whole history loaded on the chart is scanned, and every divergence found is marked.
Reading the chart
Each divergence is marked with a triangle at each of its two price pivots:
- Green triangle below the candle: bullish divergence.
- Red triangle above the candle: bearish divergence.
- Lilac triangle: provisional. The newest pivot has already turned, but its histogram zone has not closed yet. While the zone is open the marker can move to a later, more extreme bar, or disappear if the zone deepens past the older pivot. Once the histogram crosses zero the marker becomes final.
- Grey triangles: failed divergence. The next zone on the same side formed a convergence with the newer pivot: both price and the histogram went beyond it.
Final markers never disappear. A failed divergence stays on the chart in grey, so the history shows both the divergences that worked and the ones that did not.
Inputs
Indicator Settings
- MACD Fast EMA (default 12)
- MACD Slow EMA (default 26)
- MACD Signal Smoothing (default 9)
- Enable diagnostic divergence-walk logging (default false)
Appearance
- Provisional Marker Color
- Bullish (Buy) Marker Color
- Bearish (Sell) Marker Color
- Failed (Invalidated) Marker Color
Notes
- Works on any symbol and timeframe.
- Uses the built-in MetaTrader 5 MACD, so its values match the standard MACD with the same settings.
- Marks regular divergences only; hidden divergences are not marked.
- It is an analysis tool, not a trading signal: it does not check higher-timeframe trend, entry/stop/target levels, trading session or spread. A marker does not mean a trade should be taken.
- It sends no alerts, places no orders, and makes no network connections. It does not predict prices.
